A steering column assembly includes a lower jacket. The steering column assembly also includes an upper jacket disposed within the lower jacket and being telescopingly adjustable relative to the lower jacket. The steering column assembly further includes a telescope drive assembly electrically moving a telescope drive nut axially to telescopingly adjust the upper jacket. The steering column assembly yet further includes an energy absorption strap directly coupled to the upper jacket and directly coupled to the telescope drive nut to transfer axial movement of the telescope drive nut to the upper jacket.

A locking mechanism for a telescoping steering column includes an energy absorption strap having a plurality of teeth disposed therealong. Also included is a clamp bolt rotatably driven by an adjustment lever. Further included is an actuator body coupled to the clamp bolt and rotated therewith. Yet further included is a first lock cam coupled to the actuator body and engageable with the teeth of the energy absorption strap to lock the telescoping steering column in a first direction. Also included is a second lock cam coupled to the actuator body and engageable with the teeth of the energy absorption strap to lock the telescoping steering column in a second direction different than the first direction.

Dual direction locking mechanism for telescoping steering column

A steering column assembly that includes an upper jacket and a gear shift assembly. The upper jacket extends along a steering column axis. The gear shift assembly includes a shift assembly bracket and shift shaft assembly. The shift assembly bracket has a column mounting portion that is operatively connected to the upper jacket and a cradle portion extends from the column mounting portion. The cradle portion has a first sidewall and a second sidewall each extending from a base. The shift shaft assembly extends at least partially through the first sidewall and the second sidewall.

The at least one axial adjustment actuator includes a first gear rack fixed to the outer jacket and a second gear rack fixed to the inner jacket, at least one gear located between, and in tooth meshed engagement with, the first gear rack and the second gear rack and driven to translate the inner jacket relative to the outer jacket.

Axially adjustable steering column assembly

An adjustment actuator assembly for a vehicle steering system includes a leadscrew having a threaded outer surface and at least one pocket recessed radially inwardly from an outer diameter of the threaded outer surface. The adjustment actuator assembly also includes a nut having a threaded inner surface engaged with the threaded outer surface of the leadscrew, the nut axially moveable along the leadscrew during rotation of the leadscrew. The adjustment actuator assembly further includes a travel stop limiter operatively coupled to the nut, the travel stop limiter having a leg extending through an opening of the nut and spring biased into contact with the threaded outer surface of the leadscrew and moveable into the pocket of the leadscrew to limit axial translation of the nut.

A steering column that includes a first jacket and a second jacket that is axially movable with respect to the first jacket. An energy absorbing apparatus is located between the first jacket and the second jacket. The energy absorbing apparatus includes a strap body that extends between a first end and a second end. A curved portion is located between the first end and the second end and a spring segment is configured to bias the curved portion towards the first end when the connector strap is fixed to a jacket of the steering column.

A steering column comprising a first jacket and a second jacket that is axially movable with respect to the first jacket. The first jacket includes an aperture. An energy absorbing apparatus includes a strap body extending between a first end and a second end and a curved portion located between the first end and the second end. The first end includes a first connector and the second end includes a second connector selectively connected to the first connector through the aperture in the first jacket.

An axially adjustable steering column including a first jacket and a second jacket that is axially movable with respect to the first jacket. The second jacket includes a window and the first jacket includes a connector opening. An energy absorbing assembly includes a lock cam that is located in the window and connected to the second jacket and a strap body that is connected to the first jacket with a fastener extending through the strap body and the connector opening. The connector opening includes a ramp for ejecting the fastener from engagement with the first jacket.

A steering column with an energy absorbing assembly. The steering column comprising a first jacket and a second jacket that is axially movable with respect to the first jacket. The second jacket includes a window. The energy absorbing apparatus includes a lock cam located in the window and connected to the second jacket and a strap body that is connected to the first jacket. The lock cam includes a toothed portion for selective engagement with the strap body. The energy absorbing apparatus includes at least one of a cam spring located between the lock cam and an edge of the window or a bumper.

A steering column assembly includes a jacket extending along an axis and including a pair of jacket mounting plates on opposite sides of the axis. The steering column assembly also includes a mounting bracket including a pair of mounting bracket plates spaced by a bridge, wherein each of the mounting bracket plates is operably connected to a jacket mounting plate. The steering column assembly further includes at least one of the mounting bracket plates including a mating aperture defined by a pivot portion that is circular and an insertion slot extending outwardly from the pivot portion. The steering column assembly yet further includes at least one of the jacket mounting plates including a mating projection that includes at least one tab interfacing with opposite sides of the pivot portion. The insertion slot is sized to allow the at least one tab to be inserted therein during assembly.

Mounting bracket assembly

A steering column apparatus includes a telescoping column assembly and a stowing assembly. The telescoping column assembly includes a lower jacket and an upper jacket. The upper jacket is adapted to move between extended and retracted positions along a telescope axis and with respect to the lower jacket. The stowing assembly is engaged to the lower jacket, and is adapted to move between stowed and un-stowed states along a stow axis.

Stowable steering column apparatus

A steering column assembly includes a jacket assembly, a locking assembly, and an adjustment lever. The jacket assembly extends along a steering column axis and is connected to a support bracket. The locking assembly is movable between a locked position that inhibits movement of the jacket assembly relative to the steering column axis and an unlocked position that facilitates movement of the jacket assembly relative to the steering column axis. The adjustment lever is arranged to pivot about a lever axis to move the locking assembly between the locked position and the unlocked position.

A rotation control assembly for a steering column assembly includes a steering shaft. The rotation control assembly also includes a driving tab rotatable with the steering shaft. The rotation control assembly further includes a driven tab rotatable relative to the steering shaft, the driving tab adapted to engage the driven tab upon rotation of the steering shaft. The rotation control assembly yet further includes an end stop positioned to engage the driven tab upon rotation of the driven tab to the end stop, engagement of the driven tab and the end stop limiting rotation of the steering shaft.
