A liquid crystal display optical component stack-up is created with reduced defects typically caused by adhesive materials used to attach optical components to the liquid crystal display, and with improved bond line control. First and second optical components are placed in a fixture having a plurality of pins extending from a bottom platen. A layer of silicone gel is placed between the first and second optical components. The plurality of pins orient the first and second optical components to achieve a desired alignment. A plurality of standoffs extending from the bottom platen and a top platen maintain a distance between the optical components and the platens to eliminate capillary action by the silicone gel adhesive, thereby aiding in bondline control.

A liquid crystal display optical component stack-up is created with reduced defects typically caused by adhesive materials used to attach optical components to the liquid crystal display. A layer of silicone gel is positioned between a surface of the liquid crystal display and a surface of a first optical component. The layer of silicone gel attaches the first optical component to the liquid crystal display such that strain on the liquid crystal display is minimized.

An optical component assembly is created with reduced defects in the adhesion and alignment between the optical components. A first rigid optical component is placed into a cavity. A second rigid optical component is placed into the cavity such that it is supported by a first support device which prevents a first end of the second rigid optical component from contacting a corresponding first end of the first rigid optical component. Air is evacuated from a chamber formed between the first and second rigid optical components. The support of the first support device is removed so that the first end of the second rigid optical component comes into contact with the first end of the first rigid optical component with a layer of adhesive material sandwiched therebetween. A force is applied to urge surfaces of the first and second rigid optical components toward one another to improve adhesion between the two.

A non-uniform heating system is provided for liquid crystal displays. The system includes structure for applying a greater concentration of heat to the periphery of LCDs. Because mounting structures produce large heat sinks around the edges of LCDs, providing greater heat to the edges results in a more uniform distribution of heat across the LCDs. In another aspect of the heating system, rapid warming may be provided for preselected critical areas of a display to reduce warm-up time, reduce power consumption, and provide mission critical displays in situations such as scrambles of military aircraft on cold weather alert.
