The present invention relates to methods, reagents, and substrates that can be used for, for example, immobilizing biomolecules, such as nucleic acids and proteins. In an embodiment, the present invention relates to surfaces coated with a polymer according to the present invention. In an embodiment, the present invention relates to methods for thermochemically and/or photochemically attaching molecules to a surface at a high density.

Attachment of molecules to surfaces

Method and reagent composition for covalent attachment of target molecules, such as nucleic acids, onto the surface of a substrate. The reagent composition includes groups capable of covalently binding to the target molecule. Optionally, the composition can contain photoreactive groups for use in attaching the reagent composition to the surface. The invention provides controlled release compositions for treatment of parasitic mites in honeybees, the compositions composed of a covalently crosslinked polymer gel and an active agent that includes a salt of formic acid. The invention also provides methods for controlling parasitic mites in honeybees, the methods involving treating the honeybees with a controlled release composition composed a covalently crosslinked polymer gel and an active agent that includes a salt of formic acid. The invention further provides a kit for treatment of parasitic mites in honeybees, the kit including an envelope that contains a controlled release composition of the invention. Optionally, the active agent can include formic acid.

A system for producing substantially identical specific binding ligand (e.g., nucleic acid) probe arrays, for instance, by preparing and replicating an original master array and/or by providing a reusable assay array that is capable of being regenerated. In one embodiment the system includes the preparation and use of a) a master array surface having address sequences immobilized in the form of a patterned, and optionally random, array, b) a multi-ligand conjugate having a binding domain complementary to an address sequence, a binding domain complementary to a target sequence, and a third ligand for use in forming (e.g., by binding or polymerization) the conjugates into or onto the surface of assay array, which can be used with or upon disassociation of the address and its complementary sequences.

Replicable probe array

A photoactivatable nucleic acid derivative composition in which one or more photoreactive group(s) are bound to a natural or synthetic nucleic acid. The photoreactive groups can be bound to the nucleic acid before, during or after its formation, and can thereafter be activated in order to attach the nucleic acid to another molecule, e.g., to the surface of a solid support. Also described is a method of preparing such a composition, and a method of using such a composition to attach the nucleic acid to a another molecule, such as that provided by the surface of a substrate used to prepare a nucleic acid chip by photolithographic techniques.

Photoactivatable nucleic acids

A reagent composition adapted to be coated onto a support surface in order to provide that surface with a high density of reactive groups. The surface, thus coated, can be used for any suitable purpose, and is particularly well suited for use as a solid phase synthesis support surface. The synthesis support surface, in turn, can be used in repetitive and combinatorial syntheses such as the synthesis of polynucleotides, polypeptides and polysaccharides. The polymeric coating can be used to provide increased effective surface area, particularly in situations in which the effective area of the support surface is itself limited, as on the surface of a silicon wafer. In so doing, the polymeric coating provides an optimal combination of such properties as reactive density and surface area or volume.

A method and apparatus for the quantitative determination of an analyte in a liquid employs a liquid-permeable solid medium defining a liquid flow path. The medium includes a number of reactant-containing reaction zones spaced apart along the flow path and in which reaction occurs with the analyte or an analyte derivative (e.g., a labeled analyte) to result in the formation of a predetermined product. Detector means are employed to detect analyte, analyte derivative, reactant or predetermined product in the reaction zones, the number of such zones in which such detection occurs indicating the amount of analyte in the liquid.

Chemical analysis apparatus and method

A photoactivatable reagent useful as a chain transfer reagent for providing a semitelechelic polymer having one or more terminal photoactivatable groups. The reagent provides one or more photoactivatable groups and one or more sulfhydryl (or other chain transfer) groups, the photoactivatable and chain transfer groups optionally being joined together by a spacer group. The reagent can be used to prepare a polymer by serving to initiate the polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers. The reagent itself becomes an integral part of the resultant polymer, thereby providing the polymer with a terminal photoactivatable nature. The method provides a number of benefits, including the ability to provide homogeneous photoactivatable polymer compositions, e.g., in terms of the uniform location of the photogroup(s) on the terminal portion of each polymer molecule and the ability to build a desired nonpolar quality, and in turn improved surfactancy, into otherwise polar polymers.
