A method of making the combination of a power transmission belt that is to be operated in an endless path and a tensioner for the belt is provided, the tensioner comprising a support unit fixed relatively to the belt, a belt engaging unit carried by the support unit and being movable relative thereto, a biasing unit operatively associated with the support unit and the belt engaging unit urging the belt engaging unit relative to the support unit in a belt tensioning direction against the belt with a force to tension the belt, and a control unit operatively associated with the biasing unit to progressively decrease its urging force on the belt engaging unit as the speed of movement of the belt progressively increases from a certain low speed of movement thereof to a certain high speed of movement thereof.

Method of making belt tensioning means

A tensioner for a power transmission belt that is adapted to be operated in an endless path and a method of making the same are provided, the tensioner comprising a mechanical spring unit operatively associated with a support unit and a belt engaging unit for urging the belt engaging unit relative to the support unit and against a belt with a force to tension the belt, and a fluid dampening unit operatively associated with the support unit and the belt engaging unit to dampen the movement of the belt engaging unit relative to the support unit in at least one direction of movement thereof, the fluid dampening unit comprising a rotary dampening unit and being coaxially aligned with the spring unit. The rotary dampening unit comprises an outer ring member and an inner ring member disposed in the outer ring member with the members being arranged for relative rotational movement therebetween, the outer ring member being operatively interconnected to the support unit and the inner ring member being operatively interconnected to the belt engaging unit. The support unit comprises a cup-shaped housing containing the spring unit therein and having a closed end and an open end, the housing being operatively interconnected to the outer ring member. Part of the open end of the housing extends over the outer ring member and is secured thereto.

Belt tensioner and method of making the same

A combination of a power transmission belt that is to be operated in an endless path and a tensioner for the belt is provided, the tensioner comprising a support unit fixed relatively to the belt, a belt engaging unit carried by the support unit and being movable relative thereto, a biasing unit operatively associated with the support unit and the belt engaging unit urging the belt engaging unit relative to the support unit in a belt tensioning direction against the belt with a force to tension the belt, and a control unit operatively associated with the biasing unit to progressively decrease its urging force on the belt engaging unit as the speed of movement of the belt progressively increases from a certain low speed of movement thereof to a certain high speed of movement thereof.

Belt tensioning means

A tensioner for a power transmission belt which is adapted to be operated in an endless path and method of making same are provided and the tensioner comprises a rotatable idler pulley, a supporting assembly for rotatably supporting the pulley and urging same against the belt with a particular belt tensioning force with the assembly supported adjacent the belt, and a system for holding the assembly with the pulley urged against the belt, and wherein the holding system operates to lock the assembly at a fixed position immediately prior to moving the belt in its endless path and while the supporting assembly is applying the particular belt tensioning force to thereby determine a fixed center about which the pulley is rotated and the holding system operates to provide release of the assembly from the fixed position and hence the pulley from the fixed center only when the belt is stationary.

An apparatus and method for making a belt construction having a plurality of alternating annular belt projections and grooves along its axial length are provided wherein the apparatus comprises an open ended building drum for building a tubular uncured structure, a curing device for curing the structure to define a belt sleeve, a cooling device for cooling the sleeve with the sleeve disposed around the drum, and a device for supporting and rotating the drum and sleeve to enable cutting thereof with a rotatable cutter wherein the supporting and rotating device comprises a plurality of rotatable support shafts including a driving shaft, with the shafts being adapted to be disposed within the hollow open ended drum and into pressure engagement against the inside surface thereof to support such drum, a drive for rotating the driving shaft with the shafts in pressure engagement against the inside surface to provide rotation of the drum and sleeve, and a cutter control apparatus for controlling the cutter during rotation of the cutter and drum to provide a cutting action which defines the belt construction having precisely made alternating projections and grooves.
