A multifunction printing system, and a method for processing image files, which allows a sequence of multiple image processing operations on digital image files, such as photographs taken by a digital camera, to be specified and initiated at a single point in time. The system includes a command interface through which default values for image processing parameters can be set and an initial image processing operation initiated. The system also includes a scanner for receiving a combination proof sheet and order form. Prior to scanning, the proof sheet is marked by the user to identify the image files to be processed, any overriding image processing parameter values for some or all of the images, and any additional image processing operations to be performed. Image processing operations include printing image files, storing image files on a mass storage device, and sending image files via fax or e-mail.

A facsimile communication system includes a facsimile which is provided with an automatic document feeder (ADF), a Start key, a downstream-connected telephone and a manual receive mode where a user, upon hearing a facsimile signal, can press the Start key and commence a facsimile receive action. A processor present in the facsimile is responsive to the detection of (i) a ring signal from a remote communication device, and (ii) a document present in the ADF, followed by (iii) an actuation of the Start key and (iv) detection of an incoming facsimile signal (i.e., a CNG signal), to initiate a facsimile receive action. Accordingly, even though a document is located in the ADF and the Start key has been actuated, the facsimile's transmission action is inhibited. This action also occurs, even if the downstream telephone is in the off-hook state.

Method and apparatus for controlling the receive state of a facsimile

Chromatic adjustments to the overall color balance of the image are presented on one screen and tonal adjustments (such as brightness or contrast) that do not affect the overall color balance are presented on another screen. The chromatic adjustments include at least three independent variables each of which can be separately increased or decreased, while the tonal adjustments include brightness and contrast that can be separately increased or decreased. Such a grouping concentrates the user's attention on only two or three adjustments related to a single readily identifiable deficiency in the original image, and thus not only facilitates image improvement but also makes it easier to selectively undo the effects of some adjustments but not others. Each adjustment is displayed as a pair of preview images which respectively show the effect of a one step increment or decrement of the associated variable. Each pair of preview images are clearly separated from all other images on the same screen and are displayed as two adjacent 'buttons' either of which can be actuated by the user to effect the displayed result. The step size is adjustable by means of a single slider control that is effective for all the adjustments on that screen Each image adjustment screen includes thumbnail images corresponding to the original image and to the revised image. The thumbnail revised image is the largest image on the screen and is the focal point of attention for the user.
