In one embodiment, a monolithic integrated circuit includes a first UART, a second UART, and a multiplexer. The first UART has a parallel IO interface to couple to a host system to transceive parallel data and a serial IO interface. The second UART has a parallel IO interface and a serial IO interface coupled to the serial IO interface of the first UART. The first and second UARTs convert parallel data into serial data and serial data into parallel data. The multiplexer has an output coupled to the serial input of the first UART, a first input coupled to the serial output of the second UART, a second input coupled to a serial input of a serial communication port, and a select input coupled to a control signal selectively coupling serial interfaces of first and second UARTs together for remote terminal services at a remote computer system over a network.

A method and a fiber channel switch element for processing receive-modify-send ('RMS') frames in a fiber channel network are provided. The method includes, determining if a received frame is a RMS frame; modifying the RMS frame without copying the RMS frame to a transmit buffer; and transmitting the modified frame. The RMS frame is modified in a receive buffer before being sent to the transmit buffer and a port state machine controls the receive buffer where RMS frames are modified. The switch element includes a port having a state machine that determines if a received frame needs to be modified before being transmitted, and if the frame is to be modified then such modification occurs in a receive buffer without being copied to a transmit buffer before such modification. A buffer select logic selects the appropriate buffer for modifying and transmitting frames from.

Method and apparatus for accelerating receive-modify-send frames in a fibre channel network

A virtual universal serial port interface ('USI') and a virtual storage device interface ('VSI') interfacing with a host system and a remote console over a network link is provided. The USI includes a control register that receives control information from a processor and a legacy control register; and a status register that receives information from a legacy control register and based on that information, the processor formats information stored in a buffer destined for transmission over a serial port. The VSI includes, a first register that receives control information from a third register that stores control information sent by a processor used to update a fourth register that notifies the host system.

Method and system for providing a virtual universal serial port interface and a virtual storage interface

A method and a switch element for buffer utilization in a network are provided. The method includes, receiving plural frames in a first buffer, if the received frames are less than a full size frame and can be accommodated in the first buffer; sending an available buffer signal after the first buffer has been utilized; and receiving a frame after the available buffer signal has been sent. The switch element includes, a port having a state machine that monitors buffer utilization by receiving plural frames in a first buffer. Also, a method for managing a receive queue for a network is provided. The method includes, copying a receive descriptor queue entry from a first location to another location while a processor is performing a critical operation; and freeing the receive queue entry such that the processor can complete the critical operation.
