A method for processing an initial liquid medium including cells in an initial concentration to obtain a product liquid medium including cells in a product concentration includes supplying the initial medium to a separator via a first supply system, separating the initial medium into various constituents including the product medium, extracting the product medium from the separator via a first outlet system, measuring a physical parameter related to the concentration of the cells in the initial medium using a sensor, and controlling at least one process parameter as a function of the physical parameter. During the step of separating the initial medium, a solution is supplied to the separator at a flow rate via a second supply system. The flow rate of the solution is determined based on the at least one process parameter, and is reduced when the concentration of the cells measured in the initial medium increases.

Method for processing a liquid medium comprising cells

A tubing set for use in a blood processing apparatus comprises a measurement device () having at least one chamber element () for measuring a haematocrit value of a blood fluid, wherein the at least one chamber element () extends along a longitudinal axis (L) and comprises a circumferential wall () extending about the longitudinal axis (L) and encompassing a flow chamber (), the at last one chamber element () further comprising an inlet port () for allowing a flow of a blood fluid into the flow chamber () and an outlet port () for allowing a flow of a blood fluid out of the flow chamber (). The tubing set furthermore comprises an inlet-side tube section () connected to the inlet port () and an outlet-side tube section () connected to the outlet port (). Herein, the inlet port () and the outlet port () are arranged on the circumferential wall () and are displaced with respect to each other along the longitudinal axis (L). In this way a tubing set comprising a measurement device is provided which in an easy and reliable manner allows for the measuring of a haematocrit value of a blood fluid.

A blood processing apparatus () comprises a measurement device () having a first chamber element () for measuring a haematocrit value of a blood fluid, the first chamber element () comprising a first inlet port () connectable to a first reservoir container () for allowing a flow from the first reservoir container () into the first chamber element () and a first outlet port () for allowing a flow out of the first chamber element (), and the second chamber element () comprising a second inlet port () for allowing a flow into the second chamber element () and a second outlet port () connectable to a second reservoir container () for allowing a flow out of the second chamber element () towards the second reservoir container (). In this way a blood processing apparatus comprising a measurement device is provided which in an easy and reliable manner allows for a measurement of in particular a haematocrit value in the incoming blood flow as well as the outgoing blood flow.

Blood processing apparatus comprising a measurement device

Disclosed is an apparatus and method for determining the liquid level of salvaged blood in a blood collection reservoir () of an autologous blood transfusion system (), comprising sensing means () for periodically sensing the liquid level of the salvaged blood in said blood collection reservoir () and outputting corresponding signals, and determining means () for determining the liquid level of the salvaged blood in said blood collection reservoir () based on said output signal of said sensing means. The sensing means comprises a plurality of light emitters () disposed on a first side of said blood collection reservoir () at different height levels (L-L) for emitting light and a plurality of light receivers () disposed at said different height levels (L-L) on a second side of said blood collection reservoir () opposite to said first side for sensing light emitted by said light emitters () and transmitted through said blood collection reservoir (). Parameters of the optical set-up used for detection and signal analysis may be adjusted individually and dynamically so that disturbing effects caused e.g. by absorptive films on the inner surface of the blood collection reservoir () may be identified and prevented to thereby enhance the reliability of signal detection and analysis.

Apparatus and method for determining the liquid level of salvaged blood in a blood collection reservoir of an autologous blood transfusion system

The invention relates to a device for processing an initial liquid medium () comprising cells in an initial concentration in order to obtain a product liquid medium (') comprising cells in a product concentration, the device () comprising a separator () adapted to separate the initial liquid medium () into various constituents, a first supply system () for supplying the initial liquid medium () to the separator (), a first outlet system () for extracting the product liquid medium (&#x2032;) from the separator (), a sensor (&#x2032;) adapted to measure a physical parameter related to the concentration of the cells in the initial or product liquid medium (&#x2032;), and a control unit () coupled to the sensor (&#x2032;) and adapted to control at least one process of the device () as a function of the physical parameter measured by the sensor (&#x2032;). The device is characterized by a second supply system () for supplying a solution () to the separator () with a given flow rate. The flow rate of the solution () in the second supply system () during its supply to the separator () is determined based on the at least one process parameter.
