According to one embodiment, a tissue penetrating device includes an elongate shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending there between. A first needle is disposed within the lumen of the elongate shaft and is extendable therefrom between a first configuration and a second configuration. In the first configuration, the first needle is disposed within the elongate shaft's lumen and is substantially aligned with an axis of the lumen. In the second configuration, the first needle extends distally of the elongate shaft's distal end and bends away from the lumen's axis. A second needle is disposed within a lumen of the first needle and is extendable therefrom when the first needle is positioned in the first configuration and when the first needle is positioned in the second configuration. The second needle may be extended from the first needle to penetrate tissue of a patient.

A heart tissue gripping device may include a body portion, an elongate shaft, and a tissue gripping member that is attached to the distal end of the elongate shaft. The tissue gripping member being may be positioned adjacent a heart surface by insertion through an incision in the body. The tissue gripping member may releasably attach to tissue of the heart surface to facilitate a surgical instrument in performing one or more procedures. A coupling of the tissue gripping member may releasably attach the surgical device to the tissue gripping member to allow the device to access the tissue of the heart surface.

A heart implant alignment and delivery device includes an elongate body having an opening that is disposed near a distal end of the elongate body. The opening is configured so that a heart implant is positionable within the opening with the heart implant exposed to a surrounding environment and so that the heart implant is substantially aligned with the distal end of the elongate body. The device also includes an implant reposition member, such as a cable, that is releasably coupleable with the heart implant and that is operationally coupled with the elongate body so that a first operation of the implant reposition member causes the heart implant to be retractably deployed from the opening of the elongate body. The first operation of the implant reposition member may be effected via a handle mechanism that is attached to a proximal end of the elongate body.

An energy delivery device for treating a patient includes a probe body; a plurality of guide sleeves positioned inside the probe body and adapted to be deployed radially away from the probe body and into tissue of the patient; and a plurality of elongate electrode elements each adapted to receive electrical treatment energy from an energy source and adapted to be deployed into the tissue through a corresponding deployed guide sleeve. The device includes a plurality of electrodes, each electrode including: (i) a proximal section longitudinally extending from within the housing to an exterior of the housing and having a longitudinal axis; (ii) an intermediate section extending from the proximal section; and (iii) a distal section extending longitudinally from the intermediate section. After introduction, the stiffening element is removed so that the distal portion angulates relative to the proximal portion so that the cannula can be moved out of the surgical field. The cannula preferably includes a stabilizing ring having suture holders. The stabilizing ring is also preferably angled relative to the cannula.

The present invention provides a retractor for providing surgical access through a passage in a patient's body, together with a delivery device for positioning the retractor in the patient's body. The retractor comprises an anchoring frame having an upper surface, a lower surface, and an opening therethrough which defines an axial axis. A flexible tensioning member is attached to the frame, and is extendable from the frame out of the body through the passage when the frame is positioned through the passage and into a body cavity. The retractor is held by the delivery device in a collapsed orientation for placement in the patient's body. The delivery device is released from the retractor to allow the retractor to assume an expanded orientation in the patient's body. This tensioning member is selectively tensionable to spread the tissue radially outwardly from the axial axis.
