An optical or optoelectronic receiver, an optoelectronic transceiver including the same, and a method and system for protecting a photodetector in the same are disclosed. The method of protecting a photodetector generally includes providing a control voltage to the photodetector so that a current flows through the photodetector, and determining that a transient event has occurred or a transient state exists in the receiver. During the transient event or transient state, the method maintains the control voltage at a normal operating voltage when the current through the photodetector is at or below a predetermined threshold current, and switches the control voltage to a safe mode voltage when the current through the photodetector is above the predetermined threshold current.

The invention relates to a method and algorithm for stabilizing the output state of an optical transceiver. The method includes comparing a signal quality monitor (SQM) register value with a predetermined threshold. If the SQM register value is less than or equal to the predetermined threshold, a microcontroller unit (MCU) reads and determines the rx_lol state bit value of a clock and data recovery (CDR) chip. If the rx_lol state bit value reaches a low logic level value at least 3 times, the MCU converts the state bit values of rx_lol and mod_nr into low logic level values, or else, convert the state bit values of rx_lol and mod_nr into high logic level values. If the SQM register value is greater than the predetermined threshold then the state bit values of rx_lol and mod_nr will be left unchanged. When there is no data input to the CDR chip, the method of the present invention will maintain rx_lol and mod_nr at high or low logic level values to stabilize the output state of the optical transceiver.

Method and algorithm for stabilizing the output state of an optical transceiver

The disclosure relates to a tunable 50 GHz and 100 GHz channel spacing DWDM transceiver, and methods of making and using the same. The transceiver comprises an electro-absorption modulation laser (EML), a system board configured to compare a preset wavelength with an actual emission wavelength of the EML, a microcontroller and one or more associated registers configured to communicate with the system board, a temperature controlling circuit configured to stabilize the actual emission wavelength of the EML; and a wavelength meter connected to the output of the EML and having an output connected to the system board. The system board may be configured to provide a feedback loop from the EML to the microcontroller. The transceiver, suitable for 50 GHz channel spacing standards, can be made from existing standard transceivers and can switch between 50 GHz and 100 GHz channel spacing modes.

Tunable dense wavelength division multiplexing transceiver, circuits and devices therefor, and methods for making and using such transceivers, circuits and devices

The disclosure relates to a fast, stable method of output wavelength control in a DWDM optical device, and a circuit configured to perform the method. The method and circuit can control timing and overshoot during conditions of rapid operational changes, such as during power-on or restart of the device. The method and circuit includes optimized APC, TEC and electro-absorption (EA) modulator control hardware and algorithms, to effectively control transient processes. Software and circuitry based on the method(s) are achieved in part by optimizing APC, EA and TEC control algorithms. In combination with hardware/circuit optimization, one can achieve fast turn-on of an optical output signal at a stable wavelength. The method and circuit provides a stable power-up process in which a change of wavelength is small enough to meet DWDM specification requirements, to ensure the elimination and avoidance of crosstalk in adjacent channels in dense wave (sub)systems.
