In a hierarchical storage system, blocks of data selected for auto-tiering migration, are selected based on dynamically adjusted group sizes. Contiguous blocks are organized into default groups. I/O activity of the blocks in a group is monitored. Based on the I/O activity, the default groups may be sub-divided into smaller sub-groups or combined into larger groups, to separate as much as practical, contiguous series of cooler blocks and contiguous series of hotter blocks into respective focused (concentrated) groups or sub-groups. The concentrated group or sub-group may then be migrated according to the average I/O activity of the included blocks. Group configurations are continually and dynamically adjusted according to changing I/O conditions.

Automatic tiering of storage using dynamic grouping

Embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for dynamically modifying data scrub rates based on RAID analysis. The method includes determining a grouping for an array based on a temperature for the array, a configurable threshold temperature range for the array, and an I/O distribution of the array. The method further includes modifying the data scrub rate for the array based on the grouping.

Dynamically restoring disks based on array properties

An allocation instruction is received that includes a target data operand and a storage medium operand indicating a storage medium for storing the target data. A data dependency is identified that specifies metadata that includes access control information specifying which users have permission to perform a write operation to the file that includes the target data. In response to determining that the allocation instruction allocates the target data from a first storage medium to a second storage medium having a faster data IO rate, the allocation instruction is modified to also allocate the metadata specified in the data dependency to the second storage medium. In another aspect, the allocation instruction is modified to also allocate the metadata identified in the data dependencies to one or more storage mediums with data IO rates that are at least as fast as the second storage medium.

Data allocation among devices with different data rates

A storage controller receives hints provided by one or more applications over a period of time, wherein the hints are used by the storage controller for organizing data in storage managed by the storage controller. Data on conflicts caused by the provided hints are collected over the period of time. Based on the collected data on the conflicts, one or more conflict avoidance rules are executed to reduce possibility of future conflicts.

Method and system for allocating a resource of a storage device to a storage optimization operation

An allocation instruction is received that includes a target data operand and a storage medium operand indicating a storage medium for storing the target data. A data dependency is identified that specifies peripheral data on which the target data depends. In response to determining that the allocation instruction will cause the target data and the peripheral data to locate to different storage mediums having different data IO rates, the execution of the allocation instruction is prevented. In another embodiment, in response to determining that the allocation instruction allocates the target data from a first storage medium to a second storage medium having a faster data IO rate, the allocation instruction is modified to also allocate the peripheral data specified in the data dependency to the second storage medium.

Method and apparatus for storing data

An approach to providing failure protection in a loosely-coupled cluster environment. A node in the cluster generates checkpoints of application data in a consistent state for an application that is running on a first node in the cluster. The node sends the checkpoint to one or more of the other nodes in the cluster. The node may also generate log entries of changes in the application data that occur between checkpoints of the application data. The node may send the log entries to other nodes in the cluster. The node may similarly receive external checkpoints and external log entries from other nodes in the cluster. In response to a node failure, the node may start an application on the failed node and recover the application using the external checkpoints and external log entries for the application.
