Methods and apparatus are provided for automatically adjusting, by an audio device, the SPL of its audio output. As described herein, the SPL is adjusted based on detected ambient noise. According to aspects, audio device iteratively adjusts the SPL based on the ambient noise. According to aspects, the SPL is adjusted to be greater than the ambient noise by a threshold SPL amount. According to aspects, the audio device outputs sound in substantially a first direction and the microphone detects sound substantially outside of the first direction. The adjusted sounds are output by the audio device.

A wearable audio system with a first active portion that in its normal use position is carried on a user's body on a first side of the mid-sagittal plane and a second active portion that in its normal use position is carried on the user's body on a second side of the mid-sagittal plane. Sound is transmitted from one active portion and received at the other active portion. The received sound is used to estimate whether the active positions are in their use positions.

Various aspects include audio eyeglasses and methods for controlling audio eyeglasses. In some particular implementations, a method of controlling audio eyeglasses is disclosed. The method can include: detecting a reorient-and-hold gesture on the audio eyeglasses; initiating a timer in response to detecting the reorient-and-hold gesture; and in response to the timer exceeding a threshold period with the reorient-and-hold gesture maintained, powering off the audio eyeglasses.
