A system and method for establishing and maintaining a management information database is described. Upon power-up and self-discovery, a network element sends a management information notification message to the network management system identifying the managed network resources that are contained within the network element. The network management system uses the management information notification messages to update the management information database. The network management system can also subscribe to subsequent management information notification messages from the network element.

Automatic network synchronization of the network configuration with the management information database

System and method for managing networks addressed via common network addresses. The system and method facilitate proper routing and processing of network packets within a network data processing environment. The system and method include and involve a router that has an interface for communicating a network packet. The network packet includes a network address. The interface has a unique interface identifier relative to the router. The router is configured to map the network address and the unique interface identifier to a unique network address and to replace the network address in the network packet with the unique network address. The system and method also include and involve a management system that is coupled to the router. The management system is configured to receive the network packet from the router, to map the unique network address in the network packet to a customer and/or usage identifier, and to process the network packet and data contained therein based on the customer/usage identifier.

System and method for managing networks addressed via common network addresses

A system and method for managing network resources using distributed intelligence and state management is described. Individual entities are defined for each managed network resource. A plurality of entities in one or more levels of a network management system are organized based upon association and containment relationships. Each of the individual entities has an associated state value. State changes are propagated between the individual entities through state change notifications. Upon receipt of a state change notification, an entity determines whether its own state is affected. An entity can also initiate actions to improve its state.
