Properties of a multiphase mixture flow are measured in a blind-tee. The measured properties include the permittivity and/or the conductivity of the multiphase mixture flowing through a conduit. The permittivity and/or conductivity are measured at liquid-rich region(s) in a blind-tee section of the conduit and are used to determine properties of a liquid phase of the multiphase fluid flow, including one of the water conductivity, water in liquid ratio and water volume fraction. One or more electromagnetic sensors may be used in the blind-tee to measure the permittivity and/or conductivity. The sensors may be in contact with the multiphase flow or be disposed behind a dielectric window.

Measuring properties of a multiphase mixture flow

A probe for measuring electromagnetic properties of a subsurface formation includes a pad having a face adapted for engagement with a borehole wall, a pair of transmitting antennas, and two pairs of receiving antennas. The transmitting antennas and receiving antennas are mounted in the face of the pad, and each of the two pairs of receiving antennas include a first and second antenna distributed on opposite sides of the pair of transmitting antennas. The probe further includes an electronic arrangement having a transmitter module and a receiver module. The transmitter module is arranged to operate the pair of transmitting antennas in either a broadside mode or an endfire mode by applying an excitation signal modulated by two or more frequencies, and the receiver module is arranged to determine an attenuation and a phase shift of each reception signal provided by each receiving antenna relatively to the excitation signal.

Electromagnetic probe for measuring properties of a subsurface formation

An apparatus for determining a property of a downhole formation, the apparatus comprising: an array having a plurality of transmitters and receivers capable of propagating electromagnetic waves through the formation; measuring circuitry for measuring an effect of the formation on the propagating waves; control circuitry arranged to vary the propagating waves as a function of at least one of frequency, spacing and polarization; and processing circuitry arranged to combine the effects of the propagating waves that are varied according to frequency, spacing and polarization for determining the property of the downhole formation.

System and method to measure dielectric constant in a subterranean well

A method of measuring the permittivity and/or conductivity of a multiphase fluid flowing through a conduit is provided. The method includes the steps of measuring the signal from a first electromagnetic transmitter to a first electromagnetic receiver separated by a first distance, measuring the signal from the first electromagnetic transmitter to a second electromagnetic receiver separated by a second distance, measuring the signal from a second electromagnetic transmitter to the first electromagnetic receiver separated by a distance substantially equal to the second distance, measuring the signal from the second electromagnetic transmitter to the second electromagnetic receiver separated by a distance substantially equal to the first distance, and wherein the first and second distances are substantially different. This is followed by the step of combining the four signals to obtain a measurement of the phase-shift and amplitude-attenuation substantially independent of the gain values applied to the receivers and transmitters to provide an estimate of the mixture permittivity and/or conductivity of the multiphase fluid.

Method of measuring a multiphase flow

Techniques for estimating the fraction of water in formations being investigated use measurements of dielectric permittivity at a number of frequencies. The techniques have the advantage of minimizing or eliminating external inputs that can introduce inaccuracies.

Method for determining properties of earth formations using dielectric permittivity measurements

Techniques for determining formation characteristics use measurements of dielectric permittivity at a number of frequencies. Determined characteristics include the vertical and horizontal formation dielectric constant and conductivity, the formation water conductivity, the water saturation, the cementation and the saturation exponents. In laminated formations these profiles can be determined for each lamina. Also, formation dielectric properties are used in determination of the rock type.
