The output spectrum of a light emitting device comprising LEDs and/or pcLEDs is tunable by controlling emission from an activating LED to activate absorption by a photochromic material in the light output optical path of the device, or to induce emission from a wavelength converting material not otherwise active during operation of the light emitting device, or to activate absorption by a photochromic material in the light output optical path of the device and to induce emission from a wavelength converting material not otherwise active during operation of the light emitting device.

Curved light-guide optics for LED street lighting

An apparatus can include a lens that can shape light emerging from a light emitting diode (LED). The emergent light from the LED can be substantially centered around an LED axis. An incident surface of the lens can be positioned to face the LED. The incident surface can include a concave portion. The concave portion can be substantially smooth, so as not to substantially scatter light that strikes the concave portion. The concave portion can be substantially centered around a concave portion axis that is non-coaxial with the LED axis. The incident surface can include a scattering portion, positioned away from the concave portion, which can be textured so as to scatter light that strikes the scattering portion. An exiting surface of the lens can optionally include a generally planar portion that at least partially surrounds a substantially smooth convex portion.

Selectively frosted optical element for beam shaping

An autostereoscopic 3D display assembly includes pixels configured to generate a first image intended for a user's left eye, and a second image intended for a user's right eye. Each of the images is projected with a respective line pattern, where the bright portions of the left eye line pattern alternate with the bright portions of the right eye line pattern. The left eye and right eye line patterns are formed using a grating or a double grating. In one embodiment, right eye pixels and left eye pixels each include a double grating, with a different offset between the first grating and second grating to generate the different line patterns. In another embodiment, right eye pixels and left eye pixels each include a grating and one or more micro-LEDs, with a different offset between the grating and the micro-LEDs to generate the different line patterns.

A light-emitting apparatus can include a reflective cavity that can reflect visible light within the reflective cavity. The reflective cavity can allow the reflected visible light to exit the reflective cavity only at one or more specified emission locations. A visible light-emitting diode can emit visible light into the reflective cavity. An infrared light-emitting diode can emit infrared light into the reflective cavity. A lens can angularly redirect infrared light and visible light that exit the cavity through the one or more emission locations. The reflective cavity can be formed by surfaces at least partially coated with a coating that is reflective for visible light. The coated surfaces can include a circuit board that supports the light-emitting diodes, an incident surface of the lens, and an extension portion of the lens that extends from a flange to the incident surface of the lens.

A backlight apparatus can include a light emitting element configured to emit visible light. The backlight apparatus can include a polarizing device including a prism situated to receive the visible light and to polarize the visible light to generate polarized light. The backlight apparatus can include a light guide panel configured to receive the polarized light at an input surface facing the polarizing device and to distribute the polarized light to a major surface of the light guide panel facing a display screen.

A backlight apparatus can include a lens to receive light and generate light with a collimated batwing configuration. The lens can include a receiving surface and an opposing transmission surface. The lens can be symmetric about a plane of symmetry. The transmission surface can include an angle of curvature that increases closer to the plane of symmetry.
