A sensor including a light-receiving element; and an optical element that includes near infrared absorbing dichroic substance. The optical element has an absorption axis with respect to near infrared light in an in-plane direction. When linearly polarized light of near infrared light orthogonal to the absorption axis is radiated from a normal direction of the optical element and from a direction inclined by 45° from the normal direction at an azimuthal angle orthogonal to the absorption axis, an absorbance during the radiation from the direction inclined by 45° from the normal direction is more than an absorbance during the radiation from the normal direction.

Fingerprint recognition sensor and optical element

An object is to provide an optical coupling system having a simplified structure and a small size and an optical communication device using the optical coupling system. The object is achieved by an optical coupling system that couples a multi-core fiber and coupled devices to each other using a combination of a polarized light beam control element facing a light incident and emission surface of a multi-core fiber and a polarization-selective diffraction element that is positioned on a side of the polarized light beam control element opposite to the emission surface of the multi-core fiber and that faces the coupled devices.

Optical coupling system and optical communication device

A fingerprint recognition sensor having an excellent S/N ratio and capable of realizing thinning and an optical element including the fingerprint recognition sensor. The fingerprint recognition sensor includes a light-receiving element; and an optical element including a near infrared absorbing dichroic substance, in which a fingerprint reading surface is positioned on a side of the optical element opposite to the light-receiving element side. The optical element has an absorption axis with respect to near infrared light in an in-plane direction. When linearly polarized light of near infrared light orthogonal to the absorption axis is radiated from a normal direction of the optical element and from a direction inclined by 45° from the normal direction at an azimuthal angle orthogonal to the absorption axis, an absorbance during the radiation from the direction inclined by 45° from the normal direction is more than an absorbance during the radiation from the normal direction.

Display performance can be improved by reducing light leak in an oblique direction at the time of black display while increasing front brightness. Provided is a backlight unit including: a light collimating member in which a lens array is formed on one surface of a transparent substrate and a plurality of truncated cones are arranged on another surface of the transparent substrate; a light guide plate; and a light source, in which the truncated cone on the light collimating member has a shape in which a width decreases away from the transparent substrate in a height direction, a position of each of lenses of the lens array deviates from a position of the truncated cone corresponding to the lens to move away from the light source in a direction that connects a center of the lens and the light source most adjacent to the lens, an optical axis of the lens is arranged to pass through a slope of the truncated cone corresponding to the lens, the light guide plate and a surface of the truncated cone opposite to the transparent substrate are in contact with each other, and the shape of the truncated cone of the light collimating member satisfies specific expressions.

Backlight unit and liquid crystal display device

A phosphor-containing film contains a phosphor such as a quantum dot and is capable of suppressing deterioration of phosphor even where the film is formed into a laminated structure; and a backlight unit including the phosphor-containing film as a wavelength converting member. The film includes: a phosphor-containing layer in which a plurality of fluorescent regions, each of which contains a phosphor that deteriorates through reaction with oxygen when exposed to oxygen, are discretely arranged and a resin layer having impermeability to oxygen is arranged among the plurality of the discretely arranged fluorescent regions; and a first substrate film and a second substrate film, which are respectively laminated on both main surfaces of the phosphor-containing layer, in which the resin layer has a Knoop hardness of 115 N/mmto 285 N/mm, a creep recovery rate of 22% or less, and an elastic recovery rate of 60% or more.

Phosphor-containing film and backlight unit

A light guide film that is bendable, has a strong resistance to impact, and can perform the adjustment of the brightness per region, and a backlight unit. The light guide film includes a plurality of optical units each of which includes a light guide portion and an emission portion; and a resin portion that is filled between the optical units adjacent to each other, in which the light guide portion guides light incident from a light source to the emission portion, the emission portion emits light guided and incident from the light guide portion from a light emission surface, the plurality of optical units are arranged in a plane direction of the light emission surfaces such that the light emission surfaces of the emission portions are parallel to each other, and the light guide portions and the emission portions are arranged in the plane direction of the light emission surfaces.

Light guide film and backlight unit

A phosphor-containing film capable of suppressing deterioration of phosphor and capable of suppressing generation of luminescent spots and the reduction in luminance due to a defect of the resin layer. The film includes: a phosphor-containing layer having a resin layer which has impermeability to oxygen and is provided with a plurality of discretely arranged concave portions, and a plurality of fluorescent regions, each of which is arranged in the concave portion of the resin layer and contains a phosphor that deteriorates through a reaction with oxygen when exposed to oxygen; and a first substrate film and a second substrate film, which are respectively laminated on one main surface and the other main surface of the phosphor-containing layer, in which the fluorescent regions contain a binder and quantum dots serving as the phosphor.

Disclosed is an optical conversion member, including an optical conversion layer containing quantum dot emitting fluorescent light and an anisotropic light scattering layer having I (0&#xb0;)/I (40&#xb0;) of 3 or greater, in which I (0&#xb0;) indicates a transmission light intensity of the anisotropic light scattering layer at the time of allowing light to be incident on the anisotropic light scattering layer from a normal direction of a surface of the anisotropic light scattering layer, and I (40&#xb0;) indicates a transmission light intensity of the anisotropic light scattering layer in an azimuth in which a transmission light intensity of the anisotropic light scattering layer at the time of allowing light to be incident on the anisotropic light scattering layer from a direction of a tilt angle of 40&#xb0; with respect to the normal direction of the surface of the anisotropic light scattering layer becomes a minimum value.

Optical conversion member, method for manufacturing optical conversion member, backlight unit including optical conversion member, and liquid crystal display device

A polarizing plate includes, in the following order, a pressure sensitive adhesive layer, a polarizer, and an outer side layer provided on a visible side rather than the polarizer side, the thickness of the outer side layer is &#x3e;3 &#x3bc;m and &#x2264;45 &#x3bc;m, the storage elastic modulus of the adhesive layer after lamination is 0.1 MPa to 2.0 MPa, and a hardness ratio (X/Y) is less than 1, when in measuring the hardness of the outer side layer in a depth direction at intervals of 1.5 &#x3bc;m from surface A thereof to a surface B on the polarizer side, the absolute value of the difference between an n-th and n+1 measured hardness (where n is an integer of 1 or more) is defined as the hardness difference (X), and the absolute value of the difference between the hardness of surface A and surface B is hardness difference (Y).

Provided is a liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal cell having a liquid crystal layer between two glass substrates, a front-side polarizing plate provided on a front side of the liquid crystal cell, a rear polarizer provided on a rear side of the liquid crystal cell, and a backlight provided on a rear side of the rear polarizer, in which the front-side polarizing plate has a first protective film, a polarizer, and a second protective film in this order from a surface side opposite to the liquid crystal cell, the first protective film in the front-side polarizing plate is a film including a polyester resin or a polycarbonate resin as a main component, an Re of the first protective film is 3000 nm or higher, an equilibrium moisture content of the second protective film at 25&#xb0; C. and a relative humidity of 60% is in a range of 1% to 3%, and in the second protective film, a contractile force in a direction orthogonal to an absorption axis of the polarizer is 1.3 times or higher a contractile force in a direction parallel to the absorption axis of the polarizer which is capable of suppressing luminance unevenness at the four corners of the panel when a backlight is turned on after the liquid crystal display device has been stored in a hot and humid environment.

A polarizing plate includes: a polymer film; a polarizer; and a stress relaxation layer disposed between the polymer film and the polarizer, wherein a relationship of the following Expression (1) is satisfied, a thickness of the polymer film is equal to or greater than 10 &#x3bc;m, a distance(Ds) from the surface of the polarizing plate on the side of the polymer film to the interface between the polymer film and the stress relaxation layer is equal to or greater than 15 &#x3bc;m, a difference between the distance(Ds) and a thickness(C) of the polymer film is less than 15 &#x3bc;m, and a total thickness of the polymer film and the stress relaxation layer is equal to or less than 80 &#x3bc;m, 0.01&#x3c;B/A&#x3c;0.9 . . . Polarizing plate, image display apparatus, and liquid crystal display apparatus

A polarizing plate includes an outer protective film and a polarizer. The sum S of the product of the modulus of elasticity and the cube of the thickness in each layer is up to 150,000 Pa&#xb7;mm, and the value obtained by dividing the sum S by the Knoop hardness k of the outer protective film is 200 or more but up to 450. The polarizing plate is excellent in surface pencil hardness even when its thickness is reduced.

A liquid crystal display device has at least: a first and a second polarizing layers arranged so that respective absorption axes thereof are orthogonal to each other; a first and a second substrates arranged opposite to each other between the first and second polarizing layers, at least either one of which has a transparent electrode; a twisted alignment mode liquid crystal cell arranged between the first and the second substrates; a first optical compensation film arranged between the first polarizing layer and the liquid crystal cell, including a first transparent support and a layer formed by curing a composition containing a first liquid crystal compound; and a second optical compensation film arranged between the second polarizing layer and the liquid crystal cell, including a second transparent support and a layer formed by curing a composition containing a second liquid crystal compound, as defined herein.
