A communication device, method and computer program product enable transceivers to communicate via antennas supported by a configurable housing assembly. First and second housing portions are connected at respective proximal sides for relative movement between an open position and a closed position about a lateral axis. First and second antenna elements of a first antenna array each have an elongated shape and are configured to communicate in radio frequency (RF) communication band(s). The first and the second antenna elements are supported respectively by the first and the second housing portions. The first antenna element is proximate to and substantially aligned in parallel with the second antenna element when the housing assembly is in the closed position and separated when the housing assembly is in the open position. A first antenna feed/source network eliminates array cancellations between the first and the second antenna elements when the housing assembly is in the closed position.

A communication device, computer program product, and method provide a heat sink antenna that performs dual functions of thermal energy transferring and radio frequency (RF) communication. The communication device includes a millimeter wave (mmWave) antenna module. The communication device includes a heat sink antenna having a first portion in thermal conductive contact with at least a portion of a surface of the mmWave antenna module. The heat sink antenna has a second portion extending away from the first mmWave antenna module to transfer thermal energy away from the first mmWave antenna module. An RF front end of the communication device includes mmWave transmitter that radiates a mmWave signal via the mmWave antenna module, resulting in generation of the thermal energy.

A communication device, computer program product, and method mitigate interference during mobility management of antenna beam selection. A controller of the communication device determines a first direction to a first downlink from a base station downlink that is beam steered toward the communication device. The controller determines a second direction to a second downlink from the base station that is beam steered toward a second communication device. The controller determines a scan cone of two or more beam entries oriented generally in the first direction and being at least one of angularly narrowed or directed away from the second direction to avoid receiving the second downlink. The controller configures the RF frontend of the communication device with a reduced codebook based on a subset of the two or more beam entries within the scan cone for mobility management of the communication device.

A communication device, method and computer program product enable multiple transceiver communication by antennas within a configurable housing assembly. First, second, and third antennas are separate in an open position and are proximate and aligned in a closed position. A first radio frequency (RF) transceiver communicates via the first antenna and a second RF transceiver that communicates via one of the second and third antennas via the first antenna switch. A controller is communicatively coupled to a first antenna switch and a housing sensor. In response to determining that the housing assembly is in at least partially open position, the controller configures the first antenna switch to connect a second RF transceiver to a second antenna. In response to determining that the housing assembly is in the closed position, the controller configures the first antenna switch to connect the second RF transceiver to the third antenna.

A communication device, method and computer program product enable multiple transceiver communication in a communication device having a configurable housing. A pivot mechanism is connected between first and second housing portions for relative movement of a housing assembly between open and closed positions. The closed position aligns four antenna positions in the first housing portion adjacent to one of four antenna positions in the second housing portion to present four pairings of adjacent antenna positions. Four antennas are positioned within the first housing portion or the second housing portion at a different one of the four pairings of adjacent antenna positions. A radio frequency (RF) front end is communicatively coupled to the four antennas and has two or more transceivers that utilize the four antennas to communicate without antenna-to-antenna signal cancellation in RF low band while the housing assembly is in either of the open position and the closed position.

In aspects of managing antenna module heat and RF emissions, an antenna module includes antenna elements that emit radio frequency (RF) signals for wireless data communication. The antenna module also includes an integrated heat sink to dissipate heat generated by an amplifier on the antenna module, where the heat sink is formed as a metallic component having a surface approximately coplanar with the antenna elements. The antenna module also includes one or more grooves that are formed into the surface of the heat sink, where the one or more grooves are effective to allow the RF signals being emitted from the antenna elements without deformation of a radiation pattern of the RF signals.

Implementations for heat structure for thermal mitigation are described. The described heat structures, for instance, provide a multi-layered structure that optimizes heat spreading and dissipation, as well as wireless performance of wireless devices. A heat structure, for instance, is installed internally in a wireless device adjacent various internal components to absorb heat generated by the components, and to dissipate the heat. According to various implementations, a heat structure is implemented as a thermally conductive layer surrounded by layers of electrically conductive material. Electrically conductive vias can be formed that traverse the thermally conductive layer and form an electrical connection between different electrically conductive layers to mitigate current flow in the thermally conductive layer.

A communication device, computer program product, and method enable associating a closed position and an open position of a movable housing positionably coupled to a base housing of the communication device with alternate ones of first and second modes of antenna communication that respectively utilize an antenna array of a first sub-array aligned or not aligned in a second sub-array. The first array of first antenna(s) is housed within the base housing. The second sub-array of second antenna(s) is housed within the movable housing. The controller monitors a housing sensor positioned to detect the closed position and the open position. In response to identifying the mode, the controller configures a modem to use an excitation matrix associated with the mode comprising magnitude and phase settings to apply to each antenna of the first and the second sub-arrays to act either independently or as an array.

A communication device, method and computer program product enable multiple independent communication connections via multiple antennas supported by a configurable housing assembly having first and second housing portions connected for movement between open and closed positions. In response to housing assembly being in an open position, a radio frequency (RF) front end of the communication device is configured to independently communicate in at least a low band via first and second antennas supported by a first housing portion and second and fourth antennas supported by a second housing portion. In response to the housing assembly being in the closed position that brings the first and second antennas into proximity and the third and fourth antennas into proximity, the RF front end is configured to communicate via a first antenna array of the first and the second antennas and via a second antenna array of the third and the fourth antennas.

The present application provides a parasitic patch antenna for radiating or receiving a wireless signal. The parasitic patch antenna includes an antenna module, which has one or more exciter patches, where each exciter patch is respectively coupled to a signal port of one of a transmitter, a receiver, or a transceiver, and has a ground structure. The parasitic patch antenna further includes a separate mechanical part independent of the antenna module. The separate mechanical part includes one or more parasitic patches organized and arranged separate from, and proximate to the one or more exciter patches of the antenna module.

A method, wireless communication device (WCD), and computer program product deploys an additional, retractable antenna to enhance signal communication within an identified network. A processor executes an antenna deployment module (ADM) in order to determine a link status based on a quality and/or a strength of communication signals propagated via at least one stationary antenna. In response to the link status indicating that coverage of a second/target network is available or that a quality of a signal propagated within a first network is less than a threshold level, the ADM provides a deployment signal to a deployment component. In response to receiving the deployment signal, the deployment component deploys the retractable antenna by extending the retractable antenna from a stowed position to a deployed position. The ADM enables the WCD to communicate within the selected network via the deployed retractable antenna using a higher quality communication signal.

A communication device includes a processor subsystem that is in communication with a communication module, which is communicatively coupled to an antenna array to transmit and receive signals. The processor subsystem executes a near-field detection application to perform a method including transmitting, via the antenna array, a signal that is swept across a range of frequencies and receiving any back-scattered signals in the range of frequencies. The method includes determining whether a near-field obstruction exists based on characteristics of the received back-scattered signals. In response to determining that a near-field obstruction exists, the method includes triggering the processor subsystem to perform one or more responsive operations on the communication device. The operations include a selected one of: (i) altering a transmission beam transmitted by the communication device; and (ii) triggering an application to execute on the communication device, the application intended to interact with a user of the communication device.

The present application provides an antenna system for use in an electronic device having wireless communication capabilities. The antenna system includes a conductive ground structure and one or more arms. Each arm of the one or more arms having two ends and a conductive path between the two ends, where a first one of the two ends of the arm is coupled to the conductive ground structure. From the first end and along the conductive path, the arm extends along an edge of the conductive ground structure a distance away from the conductive ground structure, where the distance between the edge of the conductive ground structure and the corresponding conductor path of the respective one of the one or more arms encompasses an area forming a loop which is internal to the antenna system. The antenna system further includes a secondary conductive structure, coupled to the conductive ground structure, which extends into the area forming the loop which is internal to the antenna system.
