Materials, methods of making, and methods of using a stable and regenerable immobilized amine sorbents for rare earth element and heavy metal recovery from liquid sources. Embodiments of the invention relate to the novel combination of different polyamines, primarily polyethylenimine Mw=800 (PEI), and an epoxysilane, namely 2-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)ethyltrimethoxysilane (ECTMS), covalently immobilizing theREE and heavy metal-adsorbing amine sites within low cost, porous silica particles.

Stable immobilized amine sorbents for REE and heavy metal recovery from liquid sources

This disclosure provides polyamine sorbent compositions for the separation of metals from aqueous solutions. The polyamine sorbent compositions comprise a silica support, an aminosilane bound to the silica support, an epoxysilane bound to the silica support, and a polyamine where the polyamine is chemically tethered onto a solid silica support through via the epoxysilane. The polyamine may be further stabilized within the bulk sorbent through hydrogen bonding interactions with the aminosilane. The sorbent compositions resist leaching by HO in an aqueous stream containing heavy oxyanion-based (and other) metals and demonstrate stability over a pH range of 2-14. The sorbent compositions are useful for the separation of metals from aqueous solutions. The cationic heavy metals are captured by the co-existing amine groups (—NH, —NH, —N) from the polymeric network while additional metal capture capacity is derived from the introduction of a secondary silane linker.

The present disclosure relates to a method for the removal of organic contaminates from wastewater. The method comprises contacting wastewater comprising water and an organic contaminate with a basic immobilized amine sorbent, where the basic immobilized amine sorbent comprises a polyamine bound to an inorganic support via a linker, such that contacting the wastewater causes at a least a portion of the organic contaminate to bind to the basic immobilized amine sorbent.

The disclosure provides a composition for the separation of COfrom a gaseous mixture and a method of use thereof. The composition comprises solid Basic Immobilized Amine Sorbents (BIAS) suspended in silicone oil. The method of use comprises contacting the gaseous mixture with a sorbent slurry comprising Basic Immobilized Amine Sorbents (BIAS) and silicone oil to at least partially absorb the COfrom the gaseous mixture, and regenerating the BIAS slurry by causing desorption of the CO.

A solid sorbent for the capture and the transport of carbon dioxide gas is provided having at least one first layer of a positively charged material that is polyethylenimine or poly(allylamine hydrochloride), that captures at least a portion of the gas, and at least one second layer of a negatively charged material that is polystyrenesulfonate or poly(acryclic acid), that transports the gas, wherein the second layer of material is in juxtaposition to, attached to, or crosslinked with the first layer for forming at least one bilayer, and a solid substrate support having a porous surface, wherein one or more of the bilayers is/are deposited on the surface of and/or within the solid substrate. A method of preparing and using the solid sorbent is provided.

Layered solid sorbents for carbon dioxide capture

Two new classes of amine-based sorbents are disclosed. The first class comprises new polymer-immobilized tertiary amine sorbents; the second class new polymer-bound amine sorbents. Both classes are tailored to facilitate removal of acid anhydrides, especially carbon dioxide (CO), from effluent gases. The amines adsorb acid anhydrides in a 1:1 molar ratio. Both classes of amine sorbents adsorb in the temperature range from about 20&#xb0; C. upwards to 90&#xb0; C. and can be regenerated by heating upwards to 100&#xb0; C.

Regenerable solid imine sorbents

The disclosure provides a COabsorption method using an amine-based solid sorbent for the removal of carbon dioxide from a gas stream. The method disclosed mitigates the impact of water loading on regeneration by utilizing a conditioner following the steam regeneration process, providing for a water loading on the amine-based solid sorbent following COabsorption substantially equivalent to the moisture loading of the regeneration process. This assists in optimizing the COremoval capacity of the amine-based solid sorbent for a given absorption and regeneration reactor size. Management of the water loading in this manner allows regeneration reactor operation with significant mitigation of energy losses incurred by the necessary desorption of adsorbed water.

Briefly described, embodiments of this disclosure, among others, include carbon dioxide (CO) sorption structures, methods of making COsorption structures, and methods of using COsorption structures.

A method is provided for making low-cost COsorbents that can be used in large-scale gas-solid processes. The improved method entails treating an amine to increase the number of secondary amine groups and impregnating the amine in a porous solid support. The method increases the COcapture capacity and decreases the cost of utilizing an amine-enriched solid sorbent in COcapture systems.

High capacity immobilized amine sorbents

A new method for making low-cost CO sorbents that can be used in large-scale gas-solid processes. The new method entails treating a solid substrate with acid or base and simultaneous or subsequent treatment with a substituted amine salt. The method eliminates the need for organic solvents and polymeric materials for the preparation of CO capture systems.
