A magnet-free electric machine. The electric machine may include a stator including a first stator winding set and a second stator winding set and a rotor including a first rotor winding set and a second rotor winding set. The electric machine may include a power transfer circuit configured for controlling a polarity and/or a phase sequence of excitation currents used in exciting the first and second stator and rotor windings, and thereby, respectively generated stator and rotor poles.

Synchronous electric machine with reconfigurable rotor and stator poles

An electric machine with reconfigurable rotor poles. The machine may include a stator including a plurality of stator windings configured for generating a rotating magnetic field (RMF) and a rotor configured for rotating within the stator according to a torque induced by the RMF. The rotor may include a plurality of rotor windings wrapped around a plurality of circumferentially spaced rotor protrusions. The electric machine may include a rotor power transfer circuit operable for reconfiguring electrical excitation of the rotor windings according to a plurality of excitation modes.

Electric machine with reconfigurable rotor poles

A power transfer system for a separately excited machine includes a positive slipring and a negative slipring. One or more positive brushes and one or more negative brushes. A rotor winding attached to rotor laminations and a stator winding attached to stator laminations, such that the stator winding is outside of the rotor winding. The power transfer system may have a hollow shaft. The power transfer system may also have the negative brush and the negative slipring being exterior to the hollow shaft, and one or more position sensors. A shaft ingress separator may be within the hollow shaft and may act as a barrier between wet areas and dry areas. The power transfer system may also include a positive wire and a negative wire, which may be reversed.

A vehicle's electrified powertrain includes a battery pack linked to a traction power inverter module (TPIM) converting DC voltage from the battery pack into AC voltage. A rotary electric machine includes a stator energized by the TPIM's AC voltage, enclosing a rotor core capable of rotation. The rotor core contains slots holding conductive bars and permanent magnets, with conductive bars positioned closer to the rotor core's center. The conductive bars and permanent magnets are separated by gaps within each slot. An annular end ring assembly is present at one end of the rotor core, featuring terminal conductors connected to subsets of conductive bars and a secondary coil of a rotary transformer. When the stator is energized, the rotor shaft, connected to the rotor, rotates. The electric machine powers a transmission, which is coupled to the rotor shaft.

Hybrid excited rotary machine

Aspects of a synchronous electric motor, including a synchronous interior permanent magnet or a synchronous reluctance motor, are disclosed. The outer edges of pockets and magnet pockets, including flux barriers, selectively include one or more notches at the front of the pockets. The use of these notches may redirect flow of the magnetic flux such that overall torque ripple may be reduced without significantly adversely affecting the average torque output of the motor. In some embodiments, various characteristics of the notches may be changed to achieve optimal performance including number, geometry, and location of the notches on select outer edges of the pockets. Another characteristic includes symmetry of the notches or asymmetry, whether in the radial and longitudinal directions of the rotor.

Torque ripple compensation with rotor pocket notches in multi-layer synchronous machines

Techniques are provided for torque ripple mitigation. In one embodiment, the techniques involve determining a first torque ripple at a torque output of a target electrical machine, upon determining that the first torque ripple exceeds a threshold, reproducing the torque output based on a pair of gamma control sets, determining a second torque ripple at the reproduced torque output, upon determining that the second torque ripple falls below the threshold, generating qualified gamma controls based on the gamma control sets, and supplying the qualified gamma controls to the target electrical machine.

An exemplary compact transmission includes a drive shaft defining a drive axis and configured to be powered by a drive unit; a planetary gearset having a ring gear member, a planet gear member, a sun gear member, and a planet carrier having a carrier shaft defining a planetary axis, wherein the planetary axis is distanced from the drive axis; an output shaft defining an output axis, wherein the output axis is distanced from the planetary axis and from the drive axis; an output gear connected to the output shaft; a drive pinion gear configured to transfer torque from the drive shaft to the planetary gearset; and an output pinion gear configured to transfer torque from the planetary gearset to the output shaft.
