A rotor assembly of a motor is configured to be rotatable relative to a stator. The rotor assembly may comprise a permanent magnet rotor segment comprising permanent magnets, the permanent magnet rotor segment configured to be rotatable by a magnetic field generated by the permanent magnets; and a reluctance rotor segment comprising flux barriers, the reluctance rotor segment configured to be rotatable by magnetic reluctance formed by the flux barriers. The permanent magnet rotor segment and the reluctance rotor segment are axially stacked relative to each other so that at least a part of a first torque ripple generated by the permanent magnet rotor segment and at least a part of a second torque ripple generated by the reluctance rotor segment can cancel each other. The permanent magnet rotor segment may be a rare earth permanent magnet rotor, and the reluctance rotor segment may be a synchronous reluctance rotor.

Position sensors, including linear position sensors, that utilize magnetic field(s) are disclosed. Disclosed sensors include flux emitters and sensor assemblies. The sensor assemblies include flux collectors that interact with magnetic fields from flux emitters and with a magnetism sensing device. Flux emitters have arrangements of magnets that when combined with the sensor assembly can provide a constantly increasing or a constantly decreasing signal across a range of relative movement.

A permanent magnet motor comprises: a stator comprising teeth; and a rotor rotatable relative to the stator, the rotor having a plurality of poles, wherein each pole of the rotor comprises a pair of magnet retention slots, each magnet retention slot accommodating a magnet. Surfaces of the teeth of the stator facing the rotor are flat or have an arc shape. Each magnet retention slot may have a plurality of angled slot surfaces forming a first barrier around a corner of the magnet positioned closest to an outer surface of the rotor. At least three second barriers are positioned around a mid-axis extending along between the pair of the magnet retention slots. Each magnet retention slot comprises a slot surface slanted or curved relative to a second side surface of the magnet facing an inner surface of the rotor to form a third barrier around an end of the second side surface of the magnet.

An actuator assembly comprises: a rotatable shaft, a magnet mounted to the rotatable shaft, non-magnet material positioned between the magnet and the shaft, a rotary sensor configured to be responsive to rotation of the magnet for generating a signal, and a housing comprising a magnetic shield surrounding at least a part of the rotary sensor and at least a part of the magnet mounted to the shaft to shield the sensor and the magnet from an external magnetic field. The actuator assembly further comprises a magnet holder fixing the magnet to the shaft. The magnetic shield encompasses the magnetic flux from the magnet to the rotary sensor and also shields the rotary sensor from any external magnetic field such as stray field or magnetic field from the outside of the housing. The non-magnetic material may reduce leakage magnetic flux from the magnet to the shaft.

A permanent magnet motor (and associated rotor and stator) are described. The motor includes: a rotor having: an outer surface disposed radially from a central axis; and a plurality of permanent magnets located on the outer surface of or within pockets located between the outer surface and the central axis of the rotor; a stator having an inner surface in a spaced apart relationship to the outer surface or the plurality of permanent magnets with a gap there between that varies as a function of axial position along the central axis, and a first gap width at a first axial position is different from a second gap width at a second axial position, and the first and second gap widths are sized and configured to reduce the coping torque of the IPM motor as compared to an IPM motor having a constant gap width of the first or second width.

The first leg and a second leg of the first magnetic pair of legs are disposed within the rotor, and a first angular distance between the first leg and the second leg decreases from the outer wall to the inner wall. A second magnetic pair of legs corresponding to a second pole that differs from the first pole, a third leg and a fourth leg of the second magnetic pair of legs being disposed within the rotor to extend radially inward from the outer wall toward the inner wall, a second angular distance between the third leg and the fourth leg decreases from the outer wall to the inner wall.

A motor control system is provided. The motor control system includes a motor having plurality of motor harmonics, and a torque ripple compensation controller in communication with the motor. The torque ripple compensation controller is configured to determine a harmonic ripple current for a corresponding one of the plurality of motor harmonics. The harmonic ripple current is based on a reference q-axis current and a reference d-axis current. The torque ripple compensation controller is configured to add the harmonic ripple current for each of the plurality of motor harmonics together to determine the ripple compensating current.

A non-contacting torque sensor comprises a magnetic flux generating rotor and a magnetic flux detecting probe. Each stator has a plurality of stator teeth, with each one of said plurality of stator teeth corresponding to a unique one of said plurality of N pole magnets and S pole magnets. The magnetic flux detecting probe is disposed at a distance from the radially outboard surface and configured for detecting variations in magnetic flux produced by the magnetic flux generating rotor to detect a change of a relative twist between the magnetic flux generating rotor and the first stator and second stator. The N pole magnets and S pole magnets are injection molded.
