The present invention is directed to a polymer dissolution system comprising a mix tank, a strainer, and a pump. The mix tank is configured to receive polymers, water, and an inlet stream, to form a polymer solution including swollen polymers, and to discharge the polymer solution. The strainer is configured to receive the polymer solution, and to withdraw at least a portion of the swollen polymers therethrough substantially without shear degradation, thereby forming a resultant solution, wherein the swollen polymers are dissolved at least in part. The pump is configured to receive the resultant solution, and to return the resultant solution to the inlet stream. In some embodiments, the strainer and the pump cooperate together to maintain a viscosity of the resultant solution substantially within a predetermined range.

A continuous free radical polymerization process for the preparation of water-soluble copolymers from water-soluble monomers for further processing to dry polymers is disclosed. The process allows efficient polymerization of the monomers in aqueous solution in the presence of a free radical catalyst through backmixing. Water-soluble polymers with molecular weights of from about 3,000-30,000,000 and preferably from about 500,000-10,000,000 are obtained utilizing this process.

An apparatus for mixing or blending chemicals includes a dedicated pump for each type of chemical to be blended, such as one pump for water-based chemicals and another pump for oil-based chemicals. Each pump preferably operates in a fast speed when delivering the majority of a particular chemical into a vending vat. When the desired amount of a chemical has almost been pumped into the vat, the pump switches to a slower speed to add the remaining amount. Then, the pump is reversed to clear the chemical from the line so that another similarly based chemical can be pumped through the line into the vat.
