Methods and apparatus are provided for an open ear audio device outputting audio using an external audio speaker, bone conduction speaker, or both an external audio speaker and bone conduction speaker. In an aspect, sound is output using either the audio speaker or the bone conduction speaker based on the type of sound. Audio the user desires to keep private are configured to be output using the bone conduction speaker. In an aspect, the audio device simultaneously outputs a first sound using the audio speaker and a second sound using the bone conduction speaker. The user receives both streams of audio and selects which sound to focus on. In an aspect, the audio device determines how to output audio based on the SPL of the user's environment.

Certain implementations include approaches for managing audio notifications at an audio device according to a set of audio notification rules, for example, by delaying release of notifications and/or de-prioritizing notifications based upon the rules.

In some cases, a method includes: receiving a first audio notification from one of a set of applications; determining an importance value for the first audio notification; detecting an activity state of the audio device, the activity state assigned to a notification importance threshold; and either: delaying release of the first audio notification at the audio device in response to the importance value failing to meet the notification importance threshold, or releasing the first audio notification at the audio device in response to the importance value meeting or exceeding the notification importance threshold.

Various implementations include wearable audio devices and related methods for controlling such devices. In some particular implementations, a computer-implemented method of controlling a wearable audio device configured to provide an audio output includes: receiving data indicating the wearable audio device is proximate a geographic location associated with a localized audio message; providing a prompt to initiate playback of the localized audio message to a user of the wearable audio device; and initiating playback of the localized audio message at the wearable audio device in response to actuation of the prompt by the user.
