In general, in one aspect, an apparatus receives pixels associated with an image destined for an external display and determines a reduced backlight brightness for the external display and corresponding changes to the pixels to approximate overall quality of the image with current backlight brightness. Backlight commands are generated for the reduced backlight brightness and the pixels are enhanced to correspond to the reduced backlight brightness. The enhanced pixels and the backlight commands are transmitted to the external display via a display interface that supports backlight control. The display interface may be a wireless interface or a wired (cabled) interface (e.g., display port (DP), high definition multimedia interface (HDMI), video graphics array (VGA)). The functionality of the apparatus is included in a computing device so that backlight brightness reductions and corresponding pixel changes can be made taking into account policies of the computing device and user preferences.

Backlight modulation over external display interfaces to save power

Some embodiments describe techniques that relate to power efficient, high frequency displays with motion blur mitigation. In one embodiment, the refresh rate of a display device may be dynamically modified, e.g., to reduce power consumption and/or reduce motion blur. Other embodiments are also described.

Techniques are described to transmit commands to a display device. The commands can be transmitted in header byte fields of secondary data packets. The commands can be used to cause a target device to capture a frame, enter or exit self refresh mode, or reduce power use of a connection. In addition, a request to exit main link standby mode can cause the target enter training mode without explicit command to exit main link standby mode.

Techniques to transmit commands to a target device to reduce power consumption

Techniques are described to transmit commands to a display device during vertical or horizontal blanking intervals. The commands can be transmitted using fields that would otherwise be used to transmit color information. A Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) compliant interface can be used to transmit the commands.

Techniques to control display activity

Techniques are described that can used to synchronize the start of frames from multiple sources so that when a display is to output a frame to a next source, boundaries of current and next source are aligned. Techniques are useful to avoid visual distortions when changing from a first video source to a second video source.

Techniques for aligning frame data

Systems and methods may provide for determining an operating mode of a display device that may include a flat panel display and a controller coupled to the flat panel display. The controller may be configured to determine an operating mode for the flat panel display among a plurality of operating modes including at least a first operating mode and a second operating mode. In the first operating mode, the controller may set the flat panel display to utilize a first frame rate and a first inversion mode to save power. In the second operating mode, the controller may set the flat panel display to utilize a second frame rate, a second inversion mode, and black frame insertion to improve image quality. The second frame rate may be faster than the first frame rate. The second inversion mode and black frame insertion may be mutually configured to maintain a DC balanced operation of the flat panel display.

Method and apparatus for adaptive black frame insertion

Techniques are described that can used to synchronize the start of frames from multiple sources so that when a display is to output a frame to a next source, boundaries of current and next source are aligned. Techniques attempt to avoid visible glitches when switching from displaying a frame from a first source to displaying frames from a second source even though alignment is achieved by switching if frames that are to be displayed from the second source are similar to those displayed from the first source.

A computer can control a target device using a packet format described herein. In one example, an extension packet controls the target device in at least one of power consumption, image rendering, and register updating.

Display port compatible interface communications

A display device may include a flat panel display, and a controller coupled to the flat panel display. The controller may be configured to determine an operating mode for the flat panel display among a plurality of operating modes including at least a first operating mode and a second operating mode. In the first operating mode, the controller may set the flat panel display to utilize a first frame rate and a first inversion mode to save power. In the second operating mode, the controller may set the flat panel display to utilize a second frame rate, a second inversion mode, and a black frame insertion to improve image quality. The second frame rate may be faster than the first frame rate. The second inversion mode and black frame insertion may be mutually configured to maintain a DC balanced operation of the flat panel display.

Protocol extensions in a display port compatible interface

A system, apparatus, method and article to switch between video display modes are described. The apparatus may include a graphics device to switch between a progressive mode and an interlaced mode to display media information using a single pixel clock frequency for both modes. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Techniques to switch between video display modes

Contents of extension packets of a DisplayPort specification are described that can permit a computer to control a target device. In one example, an extension packet controls the target device in at least one of power consumption, image rendering, and register updating.

Embodiments of a graphics controller, display controller and method for compensating for low-response-time (LRT) displays are generally described herein. Other embodiments may be described and claimed. In some embodiments, an interleaved pixel stream is provided by a graphics controller to a display controller. The display controller may select low-response-time compensation for each pixel of the current frame based on the pixels of the current frame and corresponding pixels of the prior frame without the use of a frame buffer on a display panel.

An apparatus, system, and method for encoding video pixels is provided in some embodiments. At least one encoder may encode a video pixel data as a symbol. A selection unit may select the symbol.
