The invention relates to a process for producing a ring-opening polymerization product by reacting at least one polyisocyanate and 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylic acid and subjecting the reaction product to a temperature within the range of from about 40 to about 150&#xb0; C. in the presence of a catalytic amount of at least one non-nucleophilic base. The obtained polymerization product may be present as a foam and is suitable as binder, insulation material, sealant or coating and in the production of mattresses or wound pads.

Process for producing a ring-opening polymerization product

2-hydroxyethyl 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylates of formula (I): wherein one of Rand Rcan be hydrogen. Rand R, if not hydrogen, and in each case independently of one another, are selected from straight-chain, branched or cyclic C-alkyl groups, preferably C-alkyl groups, C-aryl groups, C-aralkyl groups and C-alkaryl groups, wherein Rand/or R, in each case independently of one another, may comprise at least one additional functional group, selected from hydroxyl groups, ether groups, ester groups, epoxy groups, and double bonds, and wherein Rmay be substituted with up to 10, preferably with 1 to 5, and in particular with 1 or 2 further 2-hydroxyethyl 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylic groups. The 2-hydroxyethyl 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylates can be prepared by reacting 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylic acid with epoxides and can be used for the preparation of hydroxyurethanes through reaction with amines, such as amine hardeners. Moreover, they can also be used as end groups for the blocking of amines.

The present invention suggests 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-acyl halides of formula (I), wherein X is selected from F, Cl, Br, I and mixtures thereof, preferably Cl, processes for the preparation of said 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-acyl halides, the use of said 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-acyl halides for the preparation of 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylic esters of formula (II), the use of said 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-acyl halides for the preparation of 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxamides of formula (III), and also the use of said 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-acyl halides as agents for the blocking of amines.

The present invention suggests 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxamides of formula (I), in which Rcan be, inter alia, an n-valent radical (n&#x3e;1) which is substituted with n&#x2212;1 further 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxamide groups of general formula (II), to processes for the preparation of these 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxamides, to processes for the preparation of the 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylic acids of formula (III), which are suitable starting materials for the above processes, and to the use of said 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxamides for the preparation of (poly)hydroxyurethanes, -hydroxycarbonates and -hydroxysulfanylformates, and also as end groups for the blocking of amines.
