A peripheral device may include a body. The device may include a scroll wheel rotatably coupled with the body. The scroll wheel may include a ferromagnetic rotor. The rotor may be generally annular and may define an open interior. The rotor may define a first plurality of teeth arranged about a periphery of the open interior. The device may include a stator disposed within the open interior. The stator may define a second plurality of teeth that are alignable with the first plurality of teeth. The stator may include a plurality of electro-permanent magnets. Each of the electro-permanent magnets may be disposed within a conductive coil. The device may include a position sensor that is configured to detect an angular position of the rotor. The device may include control circuitry that controls delivery of current to the electro-permanent magnets of the stator to controls a speed of the scroll wheel.

Motorized scroll wheel for an input device

A computer mouse comprising a scroll wheel, a braking system operable to provide a braking force on the scroll wheel, and a sensor system operable to detect a force or motion of the scroll wheel in the first and second directions. In response to receiving a control signal to stop rotation of the scroll wheel in the first direction, the braking system applies the braking force on the scroll wheel when the sensor indicates that the force or motion of the scroll wheel is in the first direction and removes the braking force when the sensor indicates that the force or motion of the scroll wheel is in the second direction.

Contextual braking for an input device

A method comprises receiving rotation data from a sensor configured to detect a rotation of a rotary device on a computer peripheral device, calculating a predicted rotational state of the rotary device after a period of time based on the rotation data and physical characteristics of the rotary device, and receiving updated rotation data from the sensor after the period of time. The method further includes calculating a difference between the predicted rotational state and an instant rotational state of the rotary device, the instant rotational state based on the updated rotation data and determining that a touch event has occurred on the rotary device when the calculated difference between the predicted rotational state and the instant rotational state is greater than a difference threshold value. The rotation data can include at least one of angular position data, angular velocity data, or angular acceleration data.

Rotary touch detection in an input device

A peripheral device with an adaptive scroll wheel can be used to provide additional control of a host computing device. A variable force is used to change friction on the adaptive scroll wheel for different situations. Examples include stopping a scroll wheel at an end of a document, changing a number of ratchet steps based on a number of items on a list, and changing scroll profiles based on application, such as a scroll profile for document processing and a scroll profile for gaming.

An AR/VR input device include a processor(s), an internal measurement unit (IMU), and a plurality of sensors configured to detect emissions received from a plurality of remote emitters. The processor(s) can be configured to: determine a time-of-flight (TOF) of the detected emissions, determine a first estimate of a position and orientation of the input device based on the TOF of a subset of the detected emissions and the particular locations of each of the plurality of sensors on the input device that are detecting the detected emissions, determine a second estimate of the position and orientation of the input device based on the measured acceleration and velocity from the IMU, and continuously update a calculated position and orientation of the input device within the AR/VR environment in real-time based on a Beyesian estimation (e.g., Extended Kalman filter) that utilizes the first estimate and second estimate.

Input device for AR/VR applications

A user input device that includes a rotary input control is described herein. The rotary input control includes first and second ferritic substrates; first and second permanent magnets extending between the first and second ferritic substrates to form a magnetic circuit; one or more magnetizing coils wrapped around the first permanent magnet; and a wheel defining a central volume within which the first and second ferritic substrates, the first and second permanent magnets and the one or more magnetizing coils are positioned. The user input device also includes a control system configured to direct current to the one or more magnetization coils to change a magnetization of the first permanent magnet to adjust a resistance profile of the rotary input control.

Variable response rotary input control for a computer peripheral device

A driver circuit is provided to connect a charged capacitor through a switch to the inductive windings of an electromagnet for a haptic feedback application. A feedback circuit provides an indication of the current supplied. When the current reaches a desired level, the current is cut off, rather than being controlled. The cutoff level can be slightly below the desired level to allow the desired level to be reached with overshoot. A diode is provided in parallel with the electromagnet winding when the current is shut off, providing a recirculation path that prevents the current from being discharged, thereby dissipating less energy than classical solutions.

Embodiments describe a wireless charging system including an accessory device and a host device. The host device can include a housing having a charging surface and power transmitting circuitry coupled to a power source. The power transmitting circuitry can include an inductive transmitter coil configured to receive a first power and generate magnetic field, an amplifier coupled to the inductive transmitter coil and configured to output the first power to the inductive transmitter coil, an output sensor coupled to the inductive transmitter coil and configured to measure the first power to the inductive transmitter coil, and a power tracking controller coupled to the sensor probe. The power tracking controller can be configured to receive measurement of the first power, and generate a control signal based on the measured first power to modify an output impedance of the amplifier to output a second power different from the first power.
