This disclosure relates to a demountable rotary cam with upper and lower portions that can be coupled and securely mounted on a rotatable shaft, and can also be demounted and interchanged with other similar eccentrics having different throws. The demountable rotary cam is particularly suited to vary the stroke of the needle bar in a tufting machine and an adjusting means is provided to maintain the proper relationship between the needles and loopers over a range of strokes.

A needle bar assembly for a multiple needle tufting machine including an elongated continuous mounting bar connected to the push rod of the needle drive mechanism for reciprocal movement, and a plurality of elongated, but substantially shorter, needle bar segments having needle holes for receiving the needles and secured end-to-end along and to the mounting bar, whereby individual needle bar segments may be independently attached and detached to the mounting bar, and longitudinally adjusted if desired. The needle bar assembly also contemplates a pair of needle mounting bars slideably received in a needle bar holder connected to the needle drive mechanism and two sets of substantially shorter needle bar segments secured end-to-end along each of the corresponding needle mounting bars.

A knife holder module for a cut pile tufting machine including a solid knife block member having upright knife slots therethrough for receiving corresponding knives. The knife block member includes adjustable clamp elements for holding the knives within the corresponding knife slots in solid engagement with the knife block member. The rear face of the knife block member includes a rearward projecting transverse tongue member disposed at the tension angle of the knives for infinite transverse adjustment with the knife bar. The rear face of the knife block member is also disposed at an angle to the transverse alignment of the knives equal to the pitch angle of the knives. The knife bar is also adjustably mounted upon the bracket fixed to the knife shaft.

A loop cutting apparatus for a cut pile tufting machine including looper hooks, for cooperating with corresponding reciprocal needles, mounted in a hook bar supported on a looper rocker arm for pivotal movement about a hook shaft, the knives cooperating with the looper hooks being fixed in a knife bar supported on a lever member mounted for pivotal movement on the looper rocker arm, and a drive mechanism operatively connected to the looper rocker arm and the lever member for reciprocally moving the rocker arm and lever member simultaneously in opposite directions for cooperative movement of the knives and hooks to form cut pile. The loop cutting apparatus is further characterized by locating the pivotal axis of the lever member at an elevated position upon the looper rocker arm so that the movement of the knives relative to the looper hooks is substantially vertical, thereby requiring less reciprocal movement of the hooks and knives for effectively cutting the loops seized by the hooks.

A looper apparatus for a multiple-needle tufting machine, and particularly for a narrow gauge tufting machine, including transversely spaced loopers or hooks and a plurality of corresponding spring clips or looper clips mounted on a clip support spaced in front of the hooks, and mounted to reciprocate with said hooks, so that only the clamping portions of said clips engage only the corresponding free end portions of the hooks.

A fine gauge looper apparatus for an in-line tufting machine, and preferably for a cut pile tufting machine, comprising a transverse hook bar having slot means in the front thereof, including a plurality of slots on the same needle gauge, opening through the front face of the hook bar to receive the body portions of the corresponding looper hooks, and a plurality of clamp members movably mounted on the front face of the hook bar for releasably clamping the front surfaces of the hooks in order to stably support thin looper hooks in a fine gauge tufting machine of the order of 1/16th of an inch, and for ready movement to an unclamping position for releasing, removing, inserting and replacing individual hooks.
