Watersoluble oxalkylated novolaks of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is alkyl of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is hydrogen or R.sup.1, X is ethylene or propylene, m is 6 to 100 and n is 1 to 12, are preparation agents for disperse dyestuffs. Disperse dystuff preparations containing these compounds have a stable and uniform distribution of the dyestuff particles, even with high dyestuff concentrations, and show good dyeing properties, low or no foam in dyebaths and useful viscosities in printing pastes.

Use of oxyalkylated novolaks as preparation agents for disperse

Dispersions containing (a) a pigment, (b) an oxalkylated novolak, (c) urea and/or a compound containing at least 2 long-chain aliphatic groups and which are connected via a bridge member containing ester and/or amide groups, and (d) water and/or agents retarding drying up, and, optionally, usual adjuvants, are useful for pigmenting natural or synthetic materials, especially aqueous systems containing cellulose ethers.

Stable dispersions of pigments are obtained by finely distributing inorganic and/or organic pigments in water and/or agents preventing or retarding the drying-up of the dispersions containing condensation products of aromatic hydroxy compounds and alkanals as well as surfactants, said condensation products and surfactants containing aliphatic carbon chains of more than 5 carbon atoms. A sulfosuccinic acid semi-ester of the formula ##STR1## wherein A is a group of the formula ##STR2## B is a hydrogen atom and/or a group of the meaning given for A, X is an ethylene or propylene group, R is a saturated alkyl radical having from 6 to 14 carbon atoms, Me is a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal atom or an equivalent of an alkaline earth metal atom, n is an integer from 2-25 and z is an integer from 1-9. These sulfosuccinic acid semi-esters are prepared by oxethylating multinuclear alkyl phenols, reacting the oxethylates so obtained with maleic acid anhydride to the maleic acid semi-esters and adding to these semi-esters alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulfites. Because of their slight tendency to foaming and their poor inherent colour they are excellent dispersing agents for the preparation of highly pigmented pigment preparations of good flow properties which are used in aqueous flexo prints.
