An absorbent core structure for disposable absorbent articles. The absorbent core having improved fluid handling properties. The absorbent core includes a first layer, a layer of absorbent polymer material, a layer of adhesive, and a second layer. The first layer has a first surface, a second surface, and a thickness of 0.4 mm to 1.5 mm.

The present invention relates to an airlaid sheet material comprising a dry laid fibrous web and a latex coating on both surfaces thereof in selected amounts. The airlaid sheet material can be an absorbent structure for absorption of fluids.

The core comprises a substrate layer and a non uniform layer of absorbent material comprising an absorbent polymer material and a first and second surface. The non uniform layer of absorbent material comprises a layer of a thermoplastic material comprising a layer of thermoplastic material first surface and a layer of thermoplastic material second surface. The non uniform layer of absorbent material second surface is in at least partial contact with the substrate layer. Portions of the layer of thermoplastic material second surface are in direct contact with the substrate layer first surface and portions of the layer of thermoplastic material second surface are in direct contact with the non uniform layer of absorbent material first surface. The substrate layer comprises a fibrous material substantially free of cellulose fibers, the substrate layer having a basis weight from about 25 g/mto 120 g/m.

A multicomponent material, which is comprised of chitosan material being coated onto an inert carrier material. The multicomponent material can be incorporated into an absorbent structure. In one aspect of the invention, the multicomponent material can be incorporated throughout the thickness of an absorbent structure. Absorbent articles comprising the multicomponent material are also provided.

An improved material for liquid absorption including an absorbent material in particle form with a very low average particle size dispersed into a selected inert hydrophilic organic carrier which is solid at room temperature. The present invention also includes an improved process for manufacturing the material. Such liquid absorbing material can be utilized in the absorbent cores of disposable absorbent articles, such as sanitary napkins, panty liners, interlabial devices, tampons, disposable diapers, incontinence pads, wound dressings, nursing pads, and the like.

A disposable absorbent article is provided which is substantially flat prior to use for wearing adjacent a body discharge area having a longitudinal centerline and a lateral centerline orthogonal thereto, and defining longitudinal and lateral directions respectively. The disposable absorbent article includes a liquid pervious top sheet, a back sheet joined to the top sheet, and an absorbent core intermediate the back sheet and the top sheet. The absorbent core includes an expanding member for expanding the article into a tridimensional structure while being worn by a user. The expanding member is activated by body fluids. The top sheet is capable of expanding as the absorbent article expands upon activation by body fluids.
