Disclosed is a process for the preparation of compounds of formula (I) wherein R1 is C1-C4 alkoxy; R2 is hydrogen or a group of formula &#x2014;CH&#x2014;POHor is a group of formula R1-O&#x2014;(CH&#x2014;CHO)&#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;; R3 is an alkylene, optionally substituted with one or more &#x2014;NR2-groups; R4 and R5 are both a group of formula &#x2014;CH&#x2014;POHor one of them is a group of formula &#x2014;CH&#x2014;POHand the other is a group of formula R1-O&#x2014;(CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;O)-CH-CH-; n is an integer between 4 and 50; which comprises: a) reacting a compound of formula R1-O&#x2014;(CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;O)&#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;OH with SOClor a similar reagent to give a compound of formula R1-O&#x2014;(CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;O)&#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;Cl; b) reacting the compound obtained in a) with an amine of formula NH&#x2014;R3'-NHwherein R3&#x2032; is an alkylene optionally substituted with one or more &#x2014;NH-groups; c) reacting the compound obtained in b) with formaldehyde and phosphorous acid.

A method of use of polyaminomethylenephosphonates as dispersing, wetting, and/or stabilizing agents in formulations for cements, detergents, ceramic materials, dyes, synthetic resins, rubbers, drilling fluids, and for reverse osmosis includes the step of adding a polyaminomethylenephosphonate having the formula: wherein n is an integer higher than 2, M is an alkaline metal or the ammonium ion, and R is: &#x2014;CHPOM; &#x2014;CHZ, wherein Z is &#x2014;CHOH, &#x2014;CHOHCH, &#x2014;CHOHCHCl, or &#x2014;CHOHCHOH; &#x2014;(CH)SOM, m being 3 or 4; &#x2014;CHCHT, wherein T is &#x2014;CONH, &#x2014;CONH, &#x2014;CHO, &#x2014;COOQ, &#x2014;COOX, CN, wherein Q is &#x2014;CHor &#x2014;CHand X is an alkaline metal ion or the ammonium ion; and wherein the polyaminomethylenephosphonate is present in a weight quantity of over 0.01% with respect to the total weight of the formulation.
