A medical catheter comprising a guide wire shaft having an inner diameter defining an inner lumen and an outer diameter, the guide wire shaft having a proximal portion and a distal portion, an inflation lumen tube defining an inflation lumen, the inflation lumen tube having a proximal end and a distal end, the guide wire shaft extending distal to the inflation lumen tube, an inflatable balloon having a proximal end and a distal end, the balloon distal end being sealingly affixed to the distal end of the inner lumen tube, the balloon proximal end being sealingly affixed to the distal end of the inflation lumen tube, the balloon being in fluid communication with the inflation lumen and at least one marker band being imbedded in the distal portion of the guide wire shaft, the marker band being positioned between the proximal end and the distal end of the inflatable balloon such that the marker band can be viewed under fluoroscopy.

Imbedded marker and flexible guide wire shaft

An intravascular medical catheter and method of manufacturing a medical catheter are provided herein. The medical catheter includes a guidewire shaft, a sleeve, and a balloon. The sleeve is attached to the guidewire shaft while a distal tail of the balloon is thermally bonded to the sleeve. Because of the sleeve, the distal tail of the balloon can be thermally bonded even if the guidewire shaft is made of a material which is thermally incompatible with the balloon. Thus, for example, a medical catheter can be made with an HDPE guidewire shaft and a balloon made of PEBA, PET, Polyurethane, or Nylon. The resulting medical catheter has a catheter tip which is durable, flexible, and has a relatively low profile for good tracking in the body vessel and good lesion crossing.

Balloon attachment at catheter tip

A medical catheter comprising a distal shaft having a greater flexibility than the proximal shaft. The proximal shaft has a helical end portion of reduced outer diameter which is integral with and extending from the distal end of the proximal shaft. The helical end portion slidingly fits within a portion of the proximal end of the distal shaft. The helical end portion is bonded to at least a portion of the distal shaft to form a fluid-tight seal. The pitch of the helical end portion may be constant or variable. The helical turns may be abutting or spaced apart. A guidewire shaft centrally extends longitudinally through the proximal and distal shaft such that fluid can be transmitted through the proximal and distal shaft, exterior to the guidewire shaft.

Flexible catheter

A balloon for use in a catheter, wherein the balloon is formed from an aromatic polyester, preferably a blend of a major component comprising an aromatic polyester, and a minor component comprising a compatible secondary thermoplastic semicrystalline polymer having a crystallinity less than that of the aromatic polyester of the major component.

Medical catheter with a high pressure/low compliant balloon

The present invention is accomplished by providing a dilatation balloon catheter with a flexible tip comprising a catheter body having proximal and distal ends with an outer shaft defining an inflation lumen. The catheter body has a coaxial inner guidewire shaft defining a guidewire lumen. An inflatable balloon is mounted at the distal end of the catheter body, the balloon has an outer diameter, an inner diameter, a distal end and a proximal end. The proximal end of the balloon is in fluid communication with the distal end of the inflation lumen and the distal end of the balloon is sealingly mounted to the guidewire shaft. The guidewire shaft extends distal to the distal end of the balloon, the guidewire shaft has an outer diameter and a step down area. The guidewire shaft Step down area begins just proximal to the distal end of the balloon. The guidewire shaft step down area has an outer diameter which is less than the outer diameter of the guidewire shaft. The distal end of the balloon is adhesively bonded to the guidewire shaft. The adhesive begins proximal to the distal end of the balloon and fills between the inner diameter of the balloon and the outer diameter of the guidewire shaft. The adhesive extends distally from the height of the outer diameter of the balloon at the distal end of the balloon. The adhesive tapers down distally to the outer diameter of the guidewire shaft step down area not more than 1 mm proximal of the distal end of the guidewire shaft.

High pressure balloon tip

A catheter with a guidewire shaft (1) with a proximal end which is free to move, the proximal end of the catheter having either a dual lumen (14) embodiment or a single lumen (6) embodiment. The dual lumen (14) embodiment has a stiffening wire lumen (17) through which a stiffening wire (12) extends and an inflation lumen (16) which is in fluid communication with the balloon (3). The single lumen (6) embodiment has a stiffening wire lumen (21) through which the stiffening wire (20) extends with the stiffening wire (20) defining an inflation lumen (22) which is in fluid communication with the balloon (3). A method of changing the stiffness of the distal end of a catheter is disclosed including, placing a stiffening wire (12) in an inflation lumen (5) or placing a stiffening wire (20) in a stiffening wire lumen (21) and advancing the stiffening wire up to the proximal end of the balloon (3) and stopping when the desired level of stiffness is achieved.

Adjustable stiffness dilatation catheter

A system for inserting and exchanging a dilatation catheter (18) using a lockable guidewire (23) and a guide catheter (17). The locking mechanism is engaged when a hypotube (31) is retracted in the locking section (8) and exposes the radially expanding corewire (30) which locks the guidewire (23) in place in the guiding catheter (17). The guiding catheter (17) may have a modified catheter inner surface (13) lined with a means for frictional engagement with the radially expanding corewire (30). In one embodiment the guiding catheter (17) can be lined with a threaded means complementary to radially expanding corewire (30) helical coil for mechanically holding the lockable guidewire (23) in place. Once locked, the guidewire (23) remains fixed in relation to the lesion (20) during the exchange of a dilatation catheter (18).

Lockable guidewire

A torque-transmitting structure such as a guidewire or catheter is formed of a generally flat band or wire twisted so that its longitudinal edge generally forms a helix. This twisted helical portion may be attached to a proximal shaft, and a tip member may be attached to the distal end of the helical portion. In some embodiments, the device is made of a single piece of wire, and in some embodiments, a spring coil may cover the helical portion. Where the device is a fixed wire balloon catheter, the helical portion may be attached to a proximal shaft, and the balloon mounted on the helical twisted wire, a plastic sheath encasing the main shaft and wire up to the balloon for inflation of the balloon. The helical guidewire may also be used in an over-the-wire balloon catheter.
