A method of making para-xylene or toluene is carried out by: (a) reacting a C5 or C6 linear monoene (itself, or formed from a C5 or C6 linear alkane) with a hydrogen acceptor in the presence of a hydrogen transfer catalyst to produce a C5 or C6 diene; (b) reacting the C5-C6 diene with ethylene to produce a cyclohexene having 1 or 2 methyl groups substituted thereon; and then (c) either (i) dehydrogenating the cyclohexene in the presence of a hydrogen acceptor with a hydrogen transfer catalyst to produce a compound selected from the group consisting of para-xylene and toluene, or (ii) dehydrogenating the cyclohexene in the absence of a hydrogen acceptor with a dehydrogenation catalyst, to produce para-xylene or toluene.

Synthesis of para-xylene and toluene

A method of converting at least one first alkane to a mixture of at least one low molecular weight alkane (optionally also including additional lower and/or higher molecular weight alkanes) and at least one high molecular weight alkane, comprises: reacting a first alkane in the presence of dual catalyst system comprising a first catalyst (i.e., a hydrogen transfer catalyst) and a second catalyst (i.e., a metathesis catalyst) to produce a mixture of low and high molecular weight alkanes.

Supported iridium catalysts

A method of converting at least one first alkane to a mixture of at least one low molecular weight alkane (optionally also including additional lower and/or higher molecular weight alkanes) and at least one high molecular weight alkane, comprising: reacting a first alkane in the presence of dual catalyst system comprising a first catalyst (i.e., a hydrogen transfer catalyst and preferably an iridium pincer complex catalyst) and a second catalyst (i.e., a metathesis catalyst) to produce a mixture of low and high molecular weight alkanes.

Selected nickel complexes of the anions of certain 2-aminotropones are olefin polymerization catalysts. Novel 2-aminotropones and their nickel complexes are also disclosed together with methods of making these 2-aminotropones.

Catalysts for olefin polymerization

Alpha-olefin are manufactured in high yield and with very high selectivity by contacting ethylene with an iron complex of a selected 2,6-pyridinedicarboxaldehyde bisimine or a selected 2,6-diacylpyridine bisimine, and in some cases a selected activator compound such as an alkyl aluminum compound. Novel bisimines and their iron complexes are also disclosed. The &#x3b1;-olefin are useful as monomers and chemical intermediates.

Manufacture of alpha-olefins

Disclosed herein are processes for polymerizing ethylene, acyclic olefins, and/or selected cyclic olefins, and optionally selected olefinic esters or carboxylic acids, and other monomers. The polymerizations are catalyzed by selected transition metal compounds, and sometimes other co-catalysts. Since some of the polymerizations exhibit some characteristics of living polymerizations, block copolymers can be readily made. Many of the polymers produced are often novel, particularly in regard to their microstructure, which gives some of them unusual properties. Numerous novel catalysts are disclosed, as well as some novel processes for making them. The polymers made are useful as elastomers, molding resins, in adhesives, etc. Also described herein is the synthesis of linear &#x3b1;-olefins by the oligomerization of ethylene using as a catalyst system a combination a nickel compound having a selected &#x3b1;-diimine ligand and a selected Lewis or Bronsted acid, or by contacting selected &#x3b1;-diimine nickel complexes with ethylene.

Polymerization of olefins

Certain complexes containing ligands having a phosphino group, amino group or an imino group, and a second functional group such as amide, ester or ketone, when complexed to transition metals, catalyze the (co)polymerization of olefinic compounds such as ethylene, &#x3b1;-olefins and/or acrylates. A newly recognized class of ligands for making copolymer containing polar monomers using late transition metal complexes is described.

Polymerization of olefinic compounds

Late transition metal complexes of certain neutral iminophosphine ligands are useful as components of polymerization catalysts for olefins. Useful metals in the complexes include Ni, Pd, Fe and Co. Oligomers and/or polymers of olefins such as ethylene can be made.

&#x3b1;-olefins and olefin polymers and processes therefor

Catalysts for the polymerization of olefins are provided. The catalysts contain transition metals including nickel and palladium and a diimine ligand in a square planar configuration with two other ligands, and are useful in the polymerization of, for example, olefins, cycloolefins, olefinic esters, and olefinic carboxylic acids. The cocatalyst forms a useable coordinating anion. Polymerization processes using the catalysts can produce homopolymers and copolymers, and the polymers produced may be crosslinked and/or exhibit branching.
