A method for generating light emission is provided. The method includes providing a transistor element including collector, emitter, and base regions, a quantum cascade region between the base and collector regions, and quantum well structures for interband emission within the base or emitter regions. A waveband controller applies, via first and second electrodes with respect to the collector and base regions, a first electrical signal to control a base-collector junction bias level and select between first and second base-collector bias levels. Selection of the first base-collector bias level causes at least one of the emitter and base regions to produce interband-based light emission having a first wavelength of a first wavelength band. Selection of the second base-collector bias level causes the quantum cascade region to produce intraband-based light emission having a second wavelength of a second wavelength band.

A highly efficient line transient protection circuit is provided for high power loads that are designed to operate through a high line transient. The transient protection circuit for high power loads is provided with a primary leg circuit, a load circuit and a secondary circuit. The load circuit may be a switching regulator circuit, a load circuit containing an oscillator, a push-pull circuit, a boost converter circuit, a buck converter circuit or the like. The transient protection circuit is provided with a simple driver circuit to turn on a bypass n-channel MOSFET. It operates at a higher efficiency; I.E., conduction losses are minimized during normal input voltage conditions. Furthermore, the transient protection circuit provides a programmable voltage clamp which is implemented through selecting zener diode VR. The transient protection may be used to protect medium to large current circuits from line transients. Additionally, the transient protection circuit it is suitable for applications in loads that have to operate through a high line transient (e.g. military, medical, etc.).

An apparatus in one example comprises a first capacitor component, a second capacitor component, and a switch component. The first capacitor component, the second capacitor component, and the switch component cooperate to maintain an input voltage to a target circuit at or above a cut-off voltage of the target circuit until a power circuit is able to maintain the input voltage of the target circuit at or above the cut-off voltage of the target circuit. The switch component serves to control a flow of current from the first capacitor component to the second capacitor component.

A Missile Launch and Flyout Simulator (MLFS) for simulating the UV and IR flight characteristics of an incoming missile throughout its launch, powered flight and post burnout phases, as would be viewed by a missile launch detection and tracking system. The simulator produces a UV output to simulate the launch of a missile, and an IR output to simulate the powered flight and post burnout phases of the missile's flight. In addition, the IR output ramps up in intensity during the simulated powered flight phase before dropping off to a simulated post burnout phase level, as would the IR signature of a real incoming missile. The simulator can also be programmable such that the duration of the emulated powered flight time, as well as the minimum and maximum IR intensity, can be varied to mimic the characteristics of the missile being simulated. In addition, the rate at which the IR intensity increases can be programmed so as to simulate different speeds of missile convergence to its target. The simulator is also portable and capable of being remotely triggered so that it can be used in isolated locations or on moving platforms.

Paralleled DC power supplies each comprise a half-bridge, resonant inverter (19-23) feeding a converter (25-28) connected to a common load 8. Current mode control (50-54) is provided (36) through a PWM IC (30) to which the output voltage (31) is fed back. Inverter capacitor imbalance is corrected (52, 55-59). Load sharing (71) is accommodated with offset compensating bidirectional buffer amplifier circuits (65-70, 74-76).

Resonant, current mode regulated, half-bridge power supply

A light unit has a strobe operated flash tube and a non-strobe peripheral lamp immediately beneath the flash tube; a switch can turn the unit off, operate either light or enable the pilot of an aircraft to signal the light unit to operate the flash tube or to turn off the flash tube and operate the non-strobe peripheral lamp, by means of a radio receiver having a local oscillator midway between two standard distress frequencies. The light unit may have infrared or other color lenses. A ribbon assists establishing a pattern of light and/or colors to mark a landing site and indicate wind direction.

A remote load (14) is powered by a power supply 12 in response to a PWM IC (9), the error amp (10) of which is responsive to a voltage feedback signal on remote sense leads (19, 20) from the load. Remote sense leads (19, 20) are applied through a polarity correcting bridge (23) to the input (11) of the error amp (10). To compensate for broken leads, when the output of the bridge (28) falls below a threshold voltage (32), a switch (34) operates to connect the input of the error amp to the output (16, 37) of the power supply, locally.
