Finishing a seal assembly as a unit is proposed, which prevents alignment of the end gaps of the annular body and the annular ring of the seal assembly, provides the ability to manufacture the seal assembly to very low tolerances, and establishes virtually perfect parallelism between the upper and lower surfaces of the seal assembly. A finishing process is characterized by lapping a seal assembly as an assembled unit with a lapper using gritted oil as a polishing medium.

In an annular groove carried by one of a pair of reciprocally movable members, a pin extending into the annular groove and a sidewall of the other one of the pair of reciprocally movable members, a seal assembly comprising a ring carried by an annular body mounted in the annular groove for sealing the reciprocally movable members for minimizing fluid leakage between the members, wherein the pin extends into and through a notch carried by the annular body and an end gap of the ring for retarding rotation of and between the annular body and the ring.

Seal assembly

A seal assembly includes first and second annular members which reside in axial juxtaposition to be carried by one of a pair of coaxially movable components for sealingly engaging the other of the pair of components. The assembly may be carried in an annular groove formed in one of the components. Further provided is a generally cup shaped carrier for holding the assembly in a counterbore coaxially formed in the outer one of the components. One of the annular members may include a recess for receiving the other member. Each of the members is severed by an end gap which lie along divergent axes.

Seal apparatus

A seal assembly includes first and second annular members which reside in axial juxtaposition to be carried by one of a pair of coaxially movable components for sealingly engaging the other of the pair of components. Each of the members is severed by an end gap along a slanted line which is angularly disposed to intercept a radial line of each respective member, with the slanted lines and the radial lines parallel to a plane defined by the radial surfaces of the respective annular members.

Piston ring seal having angled ends

The area of the cross-section of a piston is reduced while maintaining the over-all dimensions of the cross-section such that the ring is usable in the conventional ring groove of a piston and cylinder assembly. The reduction in the area of the cross-section decreases the inertia of the ring for increased responsiveness to the operating conditions of the assembly. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the area is reduced by forming a continuous groove in one of the surfaces of the ring.

Piston ring

A cylindrical rotor is rotatably mounted within the bore of a housing. A plurality of passages arranged in concentric annular rows extend through the rotor. Each passage is generally rectangular in cross section and is inclined with respect to the axis of the rotor. The rotor is forced to rotate in response to a gaseous stream moving through the bore and the passages. Liquid particles entrained within the gaseous stream are atomized in response to the movement of the rotor.

Atomizer

A novel motion translation mechanism is provided for translating rotary motion to reciprocal motion or reciprocal motion to rotary motion. The mechanism is adapted for use in a positive displacement machine for pumping and compressing fluids. A shaft is journaled for rotation within a stationary housing. An inclined annular bearing surface having an annular bearing thereon is integral with the shaft intermediate the journals. Reciprocal motion is imparted to a piston by a yoke ring journaled within the housing and interconnected to the annular bearing. A continuous seal arrangement is carried by the piston. Novel valve means control fluid flow within the machine.

Motion translation mechanism

A power shaft is journalled within a stationary housing having a cylinder formed therein. The axis of the cylinder is radial to the axis of the power shaft. A lever arm pivotally carried by the housing is linked by a connecting rod to a piston slidably disposed within the cylinder. A crankplate rotatable with the power shaft supports a cam follower which intermittently interacts with the camming surface on the lever arm to urge the piston through the intake and compression cycles. During the power stroke of the piston, the lever arm pushes against the cam follower, causing rotation of the crankplate. In an alternate embodiment, a wrist pin having a radially extending rod is rotatably carried by the crankplate. Gear means provide timed rotation of the rod to periodically contact and interact with the piston. Either embodiment may include a plurality of radially spaced pistons and additional respective cam followers or wrist pins. Each cam follower or wrist pin may receive several power impulses per revolution.
