Pre-impregnated composite material (prepreg) that can be cured/molded to form aerospace composite parts. The prepreg includes carbon reinforcing fibers and an uncured resin matrix. The resin matrix includes an epoxy component that is a combination of a hydrocarbon epoxy novolac resin and a trifunctional epoxy resin and optionally a tetrafunctional epoxy resin. The resin matrix includes polyethersulfone as a toughening agent and a thermoplastic particle component.

Pre-impregnated composite material (prepreg) is provided that can be cured/molded to form composite parts having high levels of compressive strength under dry conditions at room temperature and which retain their compressive strength when subjected to hot and wet conditions. The pre-impregnated composite materials are composed of reinforcing fibers and an uncured resin matrix. The uncured resin matrix includes a resin component made up of one or more difunctional epoxy resins and multifunctional epoxy resins. The uncured resin matrix further includes a thermoplastic particle component, a thermoplastic toughening agent and a curing agent. The thermoplastic particle component is composed of a mixture of a first group of polyamide particles that do not contain crosslinked polyamide and a second group of polyamide particles that contain crosslinked polyamide.

Retaining compressive strength of thermoplastic-toughened epoxy composites under hot and wet conditions

Pre-impregnated composite material (prepreg) is provided that can be cured/molded to form composite parts having high compression strength under hot and wet conditions, as well as, high damage tolerance and interlaminar fracture toughness. The matrix resin includes a thermoplastic particle component that includes polyamide particles which are composed of the polymeric condensation product of a methyl derivative of bis(4-aminocyclohexyl)methane and an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid.

Pre-impregnated composite material (prepreg) is provided that can be cured/molded to form composite parts having high damage tolerance and interlaminar fracture toughness. The matrix resin includes a thermoplastic particle component that includes a mixture of polyamide 12 particles and polyamide 11 particles.

A composite material comprising at least one polymeric resin and optionally at least one fibrous reinforcement, where the polymeric resin comprises; at least one difunctional epoxy resin; and at least one epoxy resin with a functionality greater than two having at least one meta-substituted phenyl ring in its backbone.

Composite materials with improved performance

Pre-impregnated composite material (prepreg) is provided that can be molded to form composite parts that have high levels of both strength and damage tolerance without causing any substantial negative impact upon the physical or chemical characteristics of the uncured prepreg or cured part. This is achieved by including in the matrix resin a substantial amount of a multifunctional aromatic epoxy resin that has at least one phenyl group that is meta-substituted.

A method for making a pre-impregnated composite material (prepreg) is provided. The prepreg can be cured to form composite parts that have high levels of damage tolerance. The matrix resin includes a thermoplastic particle component that is a blend of particles that have a melting point above the curing temperature and particles that have a melting point at or below the curing temperature.

A matrix resin system, for the preparation of composite parts, is comprised of a major amount of cyanate resin and an epoxy resin modified by reaction with an isocyanate. The resin system can be toughened by the addition of thermoplastic material, the toughness improvement being enhanced by the addition of a polyester rubber additive. The modified epoxy resin system is itself a resin having good modulus and Tg characteristics. The resin is cured at temperatures of 250.degree.-400.degree. F. in the presence of a metallic complex catalyst, and OH donor.
