A wireless communication system to deliver pages to wireless communication devices based on a Wireless Fidelity (WIFI) network identifier. Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) access points exchange wireless communications to serve a wireless communication device and transfer corresponding service messages to a paging control system. The paging control system processes the service messages to identify the current OFDM access point serving the wireless communication device. A WIFI gateway system receives a series of authorization requests for the wireless communication device to access a series of WIFI communication networks. The authorization requests indicate WIFI network identifiers. The WIFI gateway system transfers WIFI access authorizations to the WIFI communication networks. The wireless communication device is idle on the OFDM access points when on a WIFI communication network. In response to receiving the authorization requests, the WIFI gateway system translates the WIFI network identifiers into corresponding OFDM access point identifiers and transfers the corresponding OFDM access point identifiers to the paging control system. The paging control system processes the corresponding OFDM access point identifiers to identify the current OFDM access point serving the wireless communication device when the wireless communication device is idle on the OFDM network.

Wireless communication system to deliver pages to wireless communication devices based on wireless fidelity network identifiers

A method and system to help manage resources in a fallback scenario is disclosed. A first network may be configured to serve user equipment devices (UEs) according to a first protocol and a second network may be configured to serve UEs according to a second protocol. The method may involve the first network serving a UE, where serving the UE includes allocating at least one resource to the UE. The method may also involve, after the UE has transitioned from being served by the first network to being served by the second network for a circuit-switched-fallback call, (i) if the UE completes call setup, the first network releasing the resources, but (ii) if the UE does not complete call setup, the first network using the allocated resources to serve the UE after the UE transitions back to being served by the first network.

Method and system for releasing at least one resource allocated to a user equipment device

An interference level is determined in an uplink portion of a wireless communication link between a wireless device and an access node. A traffic class of data is identified in a first portion of the uplink portion, and resource blocks in a second portion of the uplink portion are selected based on the determined interference level and the identified traffic class. The wireless device is sent an allocation of the selected resource blocks in the second portion of the uplink portion, and control channel information is received from the wireless device in the uplink portion in the selected resource blocks.

A mobility management entity to facilitate responses to service requests comprises a communication transceiver and a processing system. The communication transceiver is configured to transfer a plurality of requests for delivery to a network element. The processing system is configured to monitor response times of individual responses transmitted from the network element in response to the plurality of requests, process the response times to determine whether or not at least one of the response times exceeds a threshold value, and responsive to determining that at least one of the response times exceeds the threshold value, increase a capacity indicator that indicates an amount of loading on the mobility management entity.

Base stations, of a communication radio access network, may be configured with schedulers that assign one or more physical resource blocks to a communication channel of a wireless device based on distance or power. The physical resource blocks allow the wireless device to communicate with the base station. Some resource blocks may be monitored across multiple sites to determine whether an aggregate power for the resource blocks exceeds a threshold. When the aggregate power threshold is surpassed, the schedulers may limit or prevent use of the identified resource blocks.

In a wireless communication system that defines a plurality of wireless coverage areas, a user equipment device (UE) may seek to select one of the coverage areas in which to operate. Each coverage area may have a respective downlink receive signal strength threshold (DSST) defining a minimum downlink receive signal strength for triggering UE selection of the coverage area. While operating in the wireless communication system, the UE may be arranged to rank-order the coverage areas in order of their respective DSSTs so as to define a sequence of the coverage areas. The UE may be arranged to then scan the coverage areas in order of the defined sequence, in search of a coverage area to select to operate in.

Disclosed are systems and methods for providing system-acquisition parameters on standardized frequencies. One embodiment takes the form of a method for assisting mobile devices with system acquisition. The method includes, in each of two or more wireless coverage areas, broadcasting from a radio access network (RAN) on each of one or more predefined frequencies one or more sets of one or more system-acquisition parameters. The method also includes configuring one or more mobile devices with logic executable for, in response to detecting a triggering event, retrieving at least one of the sets of system-acquisition parameters on at least one of the predefined frequencies, and then using at least one retrieved set of system-acquisition parameters to attempt to acquire system connectivity.

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for providing enhanced access class barring in LTE are provided. In embodiments, the method includes receiving, on a mobile device, a SIB2 message. A barring factor associated with the SIB2 message is identified. In embodiments, the barring factor is dynamic based on traffic parameters associated with a network. An upper limit for a random number is set on the mobile device and the random number is generated. The random number is generated and compared to the barring factor. If the random number is less than the barring factor, access to the network is provided to the mobile device. In embodiments, an additional random number is generated for special users or devices if the random number is greater than or equal to the barring factor.

A method and system to assign a contention-free access resource is disclosed. A first network may be configured to serve user equipment devices (UEs) according to a first protocol and a second network may be configured to serve UEs according to a second protocol. The method involves the first network detecting an attempt to set up a circuit-switched-fallback (CSFB) call between (i) a UE served by the first network and (ii) a remote party, where the CSFB call is to be served by the second network to which the UE would transition to be served with the CSFB call. The method further involves, in response to detecting the attempt to set up the CSFB call, the first network assigning a contention-free access resource to the UE, so as to allow a contention-free access request by the UE to the first network.

A wireless communication device (WCD) may determine that the WCD has bearer traffic queued for transmission to a radio access network (RAN). The WCD may be configured to transmit the bearer traffic and neighbor reports over a reverse-direction channel of the RAN. The neighbor reports may contain information related to wireless coverage areas. One or more characteristics of the bearer traffic may also be determined. Based on the one or more characteristics of the bearer traffic, the neighbor reports may be scheduled to be transmitted over the reverse-direction channel at a particular rate. The WCD may transmit the neighbor reports over the reverse-direction channel at the particular rate.

A method of managing modulation for transmission of data in anticipation of handover. When a source base station is serving a UE and determines that the UE is going to hand over to a target base station, the source base station automatically transitions to transmit data to the UE with a low-order MCS selected without regard to CQIs reported by the UE, or at least to apply an MCS corresponding with a CQI lower than that reported by the UE. By applying a low-order MCS to transmit data to the UE, the source base station may increase the likelihood that the data will arrive successfully at the UE, as the low-order MCS may be more tolerant to noise than higher-order MCSs.

Disclosed is a method and system to help ensure contention-free response to a paging message. As disclosed, when a base station transmits a paging message for receipt by a UE, the base station includes in the paging message a contention-free random-access preamble useable by the UE to engage in contention-free random access in response to the paging message. The UE thus receives the paging message and responsively engages in a contention-free random access process with the base station, to establish a radio-link-layer connection between the UE and the base station.

A method of operating a wireless packet access network comprises receiving, at a wireless network control system, a packet data request from an application in a wireless communication device, determining if the application is a member of a first application group or a second application group, and selecting a core packet network access point from a plurality of core packet network access points based on whether the application is a member of the first application group or the second application group. The method further comprises transmitting the packet data request to the selected core packet network access point to initiate access to a core packet network.

Disclosed is a method and system for managing coverage area changes using base station signaling. The method may involve a first base station increasing the distance of coverage of the first base station on a first carrier frequency such that the extended coverage extends to a coverage area of a second base station on the first carrier frequency. The second base station may also be providing the coverage area on a second carrier frequency. The method may also involve causing one or more UEs being served by the second base station on the second frequency to prioritize operating on the first carrier frequency of the second base station over operating on the second carrier frequency of the second base station.

In one aspect, an exemplary method involves a WCD: (i) determining a likelihood of roaming, wherein the likelihood of roaming indicates a likelihood that the WCD will be handed off from a preferred coverage area to a non-preferred coverage area; and (ii) using the likelihood of roaming as a basis for managing an active set of the WCD. In particular, the WCD may manage its active set by setting at least one active-set parameter affecting the number of active sectors in an active set of the WCD, and then maintaining its active set according to the setting of the at least one active-set parameter. According to an exemplary embodiment, a WCD will make an effort to increase the number of sectors in its active set when the likelihood of roaming is greater, and vice versa.
