There is provided a method of controlling a rate at which content data is received at a receiver over a network, wherein the receiver has caused a first strew of real-time communication event data to be received at the receiver, and a second stream of content data to be received at the receiver, the method comprising steps of: dynamically measuring network conditions of the network based on the real-time communication event data; and limiting the rate at which the content data is received at the receiver based on the dynamically measured network conditions.

Correction data units for data packets of a data stream are generated. A correction data unit is based on a set of the data packets of the stream. The stream is transmitted over a communication channel. A performance measure to be optimized is selected, which relates to the recovery of lost data packets of the stream. To optimize the performance measure, a plurality of correction data vectors are determined, and a plurality of a plurality of non-recovery probabilities, corresponding to the correction data vectors, are initialized. One or more of the correction data vectors are selected that contribute towards a non-recovery probability of an original data packet. The non-recovery probability associated with the original data packet is then minimized based on the selected one or more correction data vectors. The selected one or more correction data vectors are then used to determine which of the original data packets or data correction units to transmit.

Computation of forward error correction data units using loss vector probabilities

Multiple data streams are transmitted from a transmitting device via an end-to-end or process-to-process channel to a receiving device. At the transmitting device a media data stream is generated. A maximum packet size for another data stream is determined based on a determined end-to-end or process-to-process bandwidth and using playout information pertaining to the media data, which conveys a desired playout rate of the media data. At the transmitting device, based on the determined maximum packet size, a plurality of data packets of the other data stream is generated, each having a packet size no more than the determined maximum. The media and other data streams are multiplexed onto the channel at the transmitting device, thereby transmitting both of the data streams from the transmitting device to the receiving device via the same channel.

Techniques for processing content for communication sessions are described. Implementations, for example, enable various ways of detecting and storing events that occur during communication sessions.

Communication session processing

A method of regenerating wideband speech from narrowband speech, the method comprising: receiving samples of a narrowband speech signal having a first range of frequencies; identifying, based on a characteristic of the narrowband speech signal, frequencies in the first range of frequencies to translate into a target band of a regenerated speech signal; modulating the identified frequencies in the first range of frequencies of the received samples of the narrowband speech signal with a modulation signal, the modulation signal having a modulating frequency adapted to upshift the identified frequencies in the first range of frequencies into the target band; filtering the modulated samples, using a target band filter, to form the regenerated speech signal in the target band; and combining the narrowband speech signal with the regenerated speech signal to produce a new wideband speech signal.

Regeneration of wideband speech

A transmitting device for generating a plurality of encoded portions of a video to be transmitted to a receiving device over a network configured to: receive an error message over a feedback channel from the receiving device indicating at least one of said plurality of encoded portions that has been lost at the receiving device; encode a recovery portion responsive to said receiving said error message; and transmit said recovery portion to the receiving device over said network; wherein said error message includes information pertaining to a decoded portion successfully decoded at the receiving device and said recovery portion is encoded relative to said decoded portion.

Video coding

Correction data units for data packets of a data stream are generated. A correction data unit is based on a set of the data packets of the stream. The stream is transmitted over a lossy communication channel. A performance measure to be optimized is selected, which relates to the recovery of lost data packets of the stream. A coding requirement is determined. For the generation of the correction data units, it is determined, within the constraints of the coding requirement and based on previously generated correction data units, which of the data packets in the stream to include in the set on which the generation of the correction data unit is to be based to thereby optimize the selected performance measure. A generated correction data unit is generated based on a respective set of the data packets of the stream. The generated correction data units are included in the stream.

Correction data

Embodiments discussed herein include: accessing by a user terminal a recording of a communication session in the form of a media file wherein the media file comprises at least an audio component; accessing by the user terminal, metadata associated with the media file, wherein the metadata comprises an indication of a respective one or more visual representations of each of a plurality of events determined to have occurred during the communication session, wherein at least some of the visual representations comprise text converted from at least one communication stream of the recorded communication session, and wherein the metadata further comprises timing information linking the respective visual representations to the events; playing the media file using a media playing application running on the user terminal; and controlling play back of the media file so that a play back rate of the audio component is synchronized with a rate of a user scrolling through the visual representations.

A method for estimating a quality of multiparty telecommunication with a computing device includes: (a) determining individual connection quality scores of individual connections of each participant in a multiparty telecommunication call; and (b) determining a quality score for the multiparty telecommunication call from the perspective of each participant using a function of the individual connection quality scores.

Method and apparatus for computing the perceived quality of a multiparty audio or audiovisual telecommunication service or system

A method of regenerating wideband speech from narrowband speech, the method comprising: receiving samples of a narrowband speech signal in a first range of frequencies; modulating received samples of the narrowband speech signal with a modulation signal having a modulating frequency adapted to upshift each frequency in the first range of frequencies by an amount determined by the modulating frequency wherein the modulating frequency is selected to translate into a target band a selected frequency band within the first range of signals; filtering the modulated samples using a target band filter to form a regenerated speech signal in the target band; and combining the narrow band speech signal with the regenerated speech signal in the target band to regenerate a wideband speech signal, the method comprising the step of controlling the modulated samples to lie in a second range of frequencies identified by determining a signal characteristic of frequencies in the first range of frequencies.

There is provided a method of controlling a rate at which content data is received at a receiver over a network, wherein the receiver has caused a first stream of real-time communication event data to be received at the receiver, and a second stream of content data to be received at the receiver, the method comprising steps of: dynamically measuring network conditions of the network based on the real-time communication event data; and limiting the rate at which the content data is received at the receiver based on the dynamically measured network conditions.

Rate control

A method of performing a rate-distortion optimization process comprising selecting a preferred encoding mode by optimizing a function comprising an estimate of distortion for a target image portion and a measure of bit rate required to encode that portion. The estimate of distortion is based on source coding distortion and an estimate of error propagation distortion due to loss. The method further comprises transmitting the same encoded version of the video stream from the transmitting terminal to each of a plurality of receiving terminals over respective lossy channels, using the same rate-distortion optimization process in relation to each of the plurality of receiving terminals, making the same encoding mode selection per target image portion based on the same optimization of said function. The estimate of error propagation distortion comprises an aggregate estimate of error propagation distortion that would be experienced due to possible loss over the plurality of channels.

An encoder stage, and corresponding encoded bitstream and decoder. The encoder stage comprises: a variable length encoder for encoding an input signal; and a counter configured to dynamically detect an observed frequency at which different symbols are found to occur within each of a plurality of predetermined portions of the input signal, prior to the symbols of each respective portion being encoded by the variable length encoder. The variable length encoder is configured to encode the symbols of each portion using variable length coding performed in dependence on the observed frequencies detected within the respective portion of the input signal, to generate an encoded bitstream comprising the encoded symbols along with an additional element indicating information regarding the observed frequencies detected for each portion, and to output the encoded bitstream to at least one of a storage medium and a transmission medium for supply to a decoder.
