For planning radiation treatment, candidate radiation treatment plans are evaluated and optimized using an objective function that includes a combination of a first objective function and a second objective function. The first objective function is configured for determining a value of a dose metric. The second objective function is configured for determining a value of a term that is added to the value of the dose metric to account for spots or beam lets that have a weight that is greater than zero and less than a minimum threshold value. The value of the term is added to the value of the dose metric. In effect, spots or beam lets with a weight that is not zero and that is also less than a minimum threshold value are penalized during treatment planning.

Monitor unit optimization constraint in radiation treatment planning

A radiation treatment plan for a particular patient is optimized that provides corresponding resultant radiation dosing information. Such optimization can include, by one approach, calculating a corresponding influence matrix. Upon detecting at least one manual edit to at least one spot weight that corresponds to the radiation treatment plan, these teachings can provide for responsively generating new radiation dosing information in at least near real-time as a function of a corresponding influence matrix.

A computer implemented method of developing a radiation treatment plan comprising spot scanning of a treatment target comprising accessing information associated with a patient and information pertaining to a radiation delivery machine. The method further comprises determining an area associated with the treatment target, wherein the area comprises a plurality of spots and computing a weighting for each spot of the plurality of spots, wherein the weighting is associated with a number of protons delivered at a respective spot. Further, the method comprises computing timing related parameters based on information retrieved from the radiation delivery machine and determining a transition dose delivered by the radiation delivery machine during the transition from one spot to another spot when irradiating the treatment target.

Dose smearing effect modeling for radiation treatment plan

Computer-implemented methods for planning radiation treatment are used to identify, for a given isocenter and given beam energy, beam delivery angles where beam fields satisfy a criterion for transmission fields (fields with a Bragg peak that is significantly or entirely outside of a patient's body). Those beam angles can be determined and evaluated before dose calculations are performed. Treatment planning can be performed using selected, satisfactory beam angles.

These teachings provide for quickly yet accurately forming an influence matrix by generating the influence matrix via integration with a Monte Carlo particle transport simulation. The resultant influence matrix can then be utilized in an ordinary manner when optimizing a radiation treatment plan. By one approach, the foregoing comprises generating the influence matrix via integration with a Monte Carlo particle transport simulation on a particle-by-particle basis. Method and apparatus for fast influence matrix generation

Embodiments of the present invention provide an integrated solution to radiotherapy treatment planning that enables accurate recording and accumulation of physical parameters as input (e.g., dose, dose rate, irradiation time per voxel, etc.). User-defined functions are evaluated to correlate the input parameters with 4D biological outcomes. The resulting biological parameters can be visualized as a biological outcome map to evaluate decisions, support decisions, and optimize decisions regarding the parameters of the radiotherapy treatment plan, for example, for supporting clinical trials and related clinical research.
