The invention relates to a method for the identification of a gas, particularly an anaesthetic gas. The concentration measurement of a gas is carried out by two different methods, the application of at least one of the applied methods being infrared measuring, and said concentration measurements being followed by identification which is effected by utilizing both thus obtained measuring results and the corresponding values of prior known gases.

The invention relates to a method of eliminating the effect of temperature, air pressure and/or a disturbing material component or a like parameter in photometric analysis in which is generated a so-called dark signal, the passage of emitted radiation for detection being blocked at that time, a reference signal for one or more material components to be measured, said reference signal not being affected by said material component to be measured, as well as for each material component to be measured a measuring signal representing the amount of material component to be measured. According to the invention, whenever the difference between a reference signal and a measuring signal changes due to a change in any of the above parameters, there is generated a control signal which represents said parametric change and is proportional thereto, said control signal serving to change the difference between a reference signal and a dark signal in order to compensate for said parametric change. The material components to be measured may preferably comprise CO.sub.2, N.sub.2 O and/or one or more anesthetic gases.

A method of separating water from a gas sample. The gas sample is conducted from a patient to a water separating chamber having a tapered lower end. A continuous branch flow is produced from the gas sample for the separation of water, and the branch flow with the separated water is discharged from the lower end of the chamber to a first outlet by applying a vacuum to the first outlet. The gas is continuously withdrawn from the upper end of the chamber through a second outlet by applying a vacuum to said second outlet. The flow through the respective outlets is regulated so that the flow through the first outlet is preferably less than the flow through the second outlet.

Method for separating water from a gas sample

A water separator for a gas analyzer comprising a container defining a water separation chamber and having a generally conical bottom. An inlet conduit is connected to the chamber for conducting a gas sample to the chamber, and a water outlet conduit communicates with the lower end of the chamber and collected water is continuously drawn from the chamber by a pump. A gas outlet conduit is connected to the upper end of the water separation chamber and a second pump is connected to the gas outlet conduit to continuously draw gas from the chamber.
