A downhole tool may include a high-voltage power supply disposed within a housing to transform input power to the downhole tool from a first voltage to a second voltage greater than the first voltage. The high-voltage power supply may include an array of capacitors, which may include multiple rows of capacitors. The rows of capacitors may be parallel with a symmetric cross section as viewed from an end of the array of capacitors. The high-voltage power supply may also include diodes electrically coupled to the array of capacitors.

A downhole tool may include a voltage multiplier within a housing. The voltage multiplier may transform input power to the downhole tool from a first voltage to a second voltage higher than the first. The downhole tool may also include multiple shielding rings surrounding at least the voltage multiplier to reduce electric field stresses within the downhole tool. Additionally, the downhole tool may include an insulator located between the shielding rings and the housing.

The current disclosure is related to a downhole tool that comprises an electronic photon generator and at least one detector. The electronic photon generator comprises a cathode configured to emit electrons, a first target configured to generate photons when struck by the electrons, a second target configured to generate photons when struck by the electrons, and a beam steering device that directs the electrons to a first or second target. The at least one detector is configured to detect at least some of the photons emitted by the first target and at least some of the photons emitted by the second target.

The present disclosure describes a downhole tool including an electrically operated radiation generator that selectively output radiation to a surrounding environment based at least in part on supply of electrical power; and a control system that determines likelihood of exposing living beings in the surrounding environment to output radiation by determining whether one or more check conditions is met; determine that each of the one or more check conditions is met before instructing the electrically operated radiation generator to output radiation; and instruct the electrically operated radiation generator to cease output of radiation when at least one of the one or more check conditions is no longer met.

A well-logging tool may include a sonde housing, and a radiation generator carried by the sonde housing. The radiation generator may include a generator housing, a target carried by the generator housing, a charged particle source carried by the generator housing to direct charged particles at the target, and at least one voltage source coupled to the charged particle source. The at least one voltage source may include a voltage ladder comprising a plurality of voltage multiplication stages coupled in a bi-polar configuration, and at least one loading coil coupled at at least one intermediate position along the voltage ladder. The well-logging tool may further include at least one radiation detector carried by the sonde housing.

The techniques and device provided herein relate to regulating a source generator in an X-ray based equipment. In particular, an X-ray system is provided that comprises an X-ray generator and a reference detector system that regulates the output of the X-ray generator. The reference detector system comprises a direct channel that allows at least a portion of the photons to directly reach the detector crystal and a plurality of fluorescent channels, such that photon flux entering the reference detector from the fluorescent channels is negligibly impacted by variations of beam spots, shapes and/or positions.

A system is disclosed for downhole logging. The system comprises a photon source configured to generate photons at different endpoint energies; at least one radiation detector configured to detect photons after interactions with a wellbore, a geological formation surrounding the wellbore, or both; an energy detection system configured to determine an endpoint energy of the photon source; and a processing system configured to determine properties of a wellbore, a geological formation, or both, based on photons detected at the at least one radiation detector and the endpoint energy determined by the energy detection system.

A well-logging tool may include a sonde housing and a radiation generator carried by the sonde housing. The radiation generator may include a generator housing, a target carried by the generator housing, a charged particle source carried by the generator housing to direct charged particles at the target, and at least one voltage source coupled to the charged particle source. The at least one voltage source may include a voltage ladder comprising a plurality of voltage multiplication stages coupled in a uni-polar configuration, and at least one loading coil coupled at at least one intermediate position along the voltage ladder. A radiation generator may include an elongate generator housing having a proximal end and a distal end, a target electrode within the housing at the distal end thereof, a charged particle source within the housing at the proximal end thereof to direct charged particles at the target based upon a first biasing potential, and a field shaping electrode within the housing and adjacent the source to shape a field within the housing. At least one accelerator electrode may be within the housing on an opposite side of the field shaping electrode from the source to accelerate charged particles from the source to the target based upon a second biasing potential different than the first biasing potential. The field shaping electrode may be electrically floating so that the charged particles are directed from the source to the target without applying a biasing potential to the field shaping electrode.

A radiation generator is provided that includes a target, a cathode to emit electrons in a downstream direction toward the target, a first conductive member downstream of the cathode, and a second conductive member downstream of the cathode. The first and second conductive members have a potential difference with the cathode such that a resultant electric field accelerates the electrons toward the target. A diagnostic current in the second conductive member and a target current in the target may be measured, and an electrical property of the first conductive member may be adjusted based upon the diagnostic current and the target current.

Logging-while-drilling tools incorporating an electronic radiation generator, such as an electronic X-ray generator, and a method for using the same are provided. One example of such a logging-while-drilling tool may include a circumferential drill collar, a chassis disposed radially interior to the drill collar, and an electronic X-ray generator and an X-ray detector disposed within the chassis. The electronic X-ray generator may emit X-rays out of the logging-while-drilling tool into a subterranean formation. The X-ray detector may detect X-rays that return to the logging-while-drilling tool after scattering in the subterranean formation, which may be used to determine a density and/or a lithology of the subterranean formation.
