In a first operating mode, a fuel quantity is predefined according to a first rule for calculating the quantity based on at least the torque variable. In a second operating mode, the fuel quantity is predefined according to a second rule for calculating the quantity based on at least the torque variable. A control variable is predefined on the basis of at least the torque variable.
