The hanging system has at least one hanger which is attachable to a picture frame and on which a support element is detachably mountable and which is able to project beyond the picture frame to which the hanger is attached in use. The hanger has at least one holding mechanism for a hanging cord by which the picture frame can be hung on the hanging cord. The holding mechanism has a clamping device which is connected to the hanger and by which the hanging cord is fixedly securable to the hanger by clamping.
