A piston and method of making the same includes providing a piston lower part defining a piston axis and at least a portion of the upper combustion bowl surface, and assembling a piston upper part to the piston lower part. The piston upper and lower parts cooperate to define at least in part a cooling gallery extending annularly about the piston. The method further includes bringing the piston upper and lower parts together along respective upper and lower mating surfaces and inducing an electric current between the upper and lower mating surfaces while the upper and lower mating surfaces are in contact.

Magnetic arc welded piston assembly

Pistons and methods of making the same are disclosed. An exemplary piston assembly may include a piston crown and skirt. The crown may include a crown collar wall extending downward toward a free end of the crown collar wall. The skirt may include a pair of oppositely disposed pin bosses that each define piston pin bores configured to receive a piston pin for securing a connecting rod between the pin bosses. The skirt may further include a radially inner skirt mating surface abutted along a radially inner interface region with the radially inner crown mating surface, and a radially outer skirt mating surface abutted along a radially outer interface region with the radially outer crown mating surface such that a cooling gallery is substantially enclosed. The skirt may further include an inner collar wall extending upwards to the free end of the crown collar wall.

Piston with cooling gallery and closed collar chamber

A method for the production of a piston for an internal combustion engine, in which a piston blank is forged, which is subsequently separated into two parts, to form an upper piston part and a lower piston part, after which the lower piston part and the upper piston part are machined and then welded to one another. Subsequently, the piston is finished. During forging of the piston blank, the top of the piston blank is partly given the shape of the underside of the upper piston part, and the underside of the piston blank is given the shape that corresponds to the interior of the lower piston part. After forging of the piston blank and before separation of the upper piston part from the lower piston part, the top of the piston blank is given the finished shape of the underside of the upper piston part by a cutting machining method.

Method for the production of a piston for an internal combustion engine

A method for the production of a piston has the following method steps: (a) providing a blank of a piston base body, having an outer joining surface, an inner joining surface and a circumferential lower cooling channel part that runs between the two joining surfaces, (b) providing a blank of a piston ring element, having an outer joining surface, an inner joining surface and a circumferential upper cooling channel part that runs between the two joining surfaces, (c) forming a circumferential widened region on at least one joining surface, the widened region extending toward the related cooling channel part, (d) connecting the blank of the piston base body with the blank of the piston ring element by way of their joining surfaces, by friction welding, to produce a piston blank, and (e) machining the piston blank further and/or finish-machining it to produce a piston.

Piston for an internal combustion engine and method for its production

A multi-part piston for an internal combustion engine has an upper piston part and a lower piston part. The upper piston part and the lower piston part each have an inner and an outer support element, which elements delimit an outer circumferential cooling channel and an inner cooling chamber, whose cooling chamber bottom has an opening. The opening is closed off with a separate closure element, which has at least one cooling oil opening.

Multi-part piston for an internal combustion engine

The present invention relates to a method for producing a single part piston () for an internal combustion engine from a piston blank (), with a cooling channel () that is open in the downward direction running circularly inside a piston head (), and an annular recess () built between the piston head () and a piston shaft (), wherein the piston head () and the piston shaft () are connected to each other by means of a piston hub (), and wherein the annular recess () and the cooling channel () are machined into the piston blank () by means of a cutting operation. According to the invention, it is provided that, for the cutting operation of the cooling channel (), a tool () is moved into the area of the cooling channel () in an arc-shaped pivoting movement (A) through the recess (), and that the cooling channel () is cut.
