Acetals of polyvinyl alcohol are described in which at least some of the acetal groups are derived from terminally etherified oxyethylene aldehydes/oxaalkanals of the formula ##STR1## The new acetals are internally plasticized and can be processed thermoplastically without external plasticizers.
