Fatty acid esters of which the fatty acid constituents are fatty acids containing a total of 12 to 22 carbon atoms and of which the alcohol constituents are saturated and/or mono- or polyolefinically unsaturated monoalcohols containing a total of 1 to 22 carbon atoms, with the additional proviso that the fatty acid constituents of the esters contain saturated and/or mono- or polyolefinically unsaturated fatty acids and have a branched structure, isostearic acid being excluded as the fatty acid constituent of the esters, are suitable as solvents for printing inks.

Fatty acid esters based on branched fatty acids and their use as printing ink solvents

Fatty (meth)acrylates having a %-EpO content of below 0.6, which are reaction products of epoxidized compounds selected from the group consisting of epoxidized fatty acid esters, epoxidized triglycerides and mixtures thereof, and acids selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and mixtures thereof, wherein the %-EpO content of the epoxidized compound is above 6.4, wherein the epoxidized compound is an epoxidation product of fatty acid moieties having one or more carbon-carbon double bonds, wherein less than 20 mole % of the fatty acid moieties contain three or more carbon-carbon double bonds, and wherein greater than 60 mole % of the fatty acid moieties contain two carbon-carbon double bonds are useful as pigment dispersants. Pigment dispersant concentrates, aqueous pigment dispersions and methods of dispersing pigments with the fatty (meth)acrylates are described.

Fatty (meth) acrylates and their use in dispersing pigments

Processes and apparatus for producing esters are described. The processes include: (a) providing a liquid reaction mixture comprising (i) an unsaturated carboxylic acid having a boiling point greater than water, (ii) a polyhydric alcohol, and (iii) a first polymerization inhibitor, in a reaction zone having an inner surface; (b) reacting the acid and the polyhydric alcohol to form an ester, such that a gas/vapor phase is formed comprising water of reaction; (c) removing at least a portion of the gas/vapor phase from the reaction zone to a dephlegmation zone having an inner surface; (d) partially condensing the portion of the gas/vapor phase in the dephlegmation zone such that a condensate is formed; and (e) returning the condensate to the reaction zone; wherein a second polymerization inhibitor is introduced into the dephlegmation zone such that the portion of the gas/vapor phase and/or the condensate are contacted with the second polymerization inhibitor. Apparatus for carrying out the processes are also described.

Aromatic compound-free solvent for printing inks, consisting of a solvent mixture characterised in that is contains (a) 80-99% by weight aromatic compound-free mineral oil; (b) 1 to 20% by weight of an ester of a C,-C,fatty acid with up to 60 C atoms in total; and/or (c) 1 to 20% by weight of a fatty alcohol with 6 to 36 C atoms. Also disclosed are printing inks that contain binders, pigments, aromatic compound-free solvents and optional additives.
