A fluid pumping system comprises a housing, an electric motor, a rotatable first input, a rotatable second input driven by the electric motor, a gerotor including an inner rotor, an outer rotor; and a cam ring in sliding receipt of the outer rotor. The cam ring is selectively rotatable by one of the first input and the second input. The inner rotor is rotatable by the other of the first input and the second input. The housing includes a first fluid inlet passage on a first side of the cam ring and a second fluid inlet passage on an opposite side of the cam ring. Fluid entering a cavity between the inner rotor and the outer rotor flows parallel to the axis of rotation of the first input. The cam ring includes a radially extending outlet port and pumped fluid flows radially out of the cavity.

Dual drive gerotor pump

An electrohydraulic actuator assembly for use in a brake-by-wire hydraulic brake system. The electrohydraulic actuator assembly includes a pair of electrohydraulic actuator EHA units. One EHA unit provides fluid to front brakes and the other EHA unit provides fluid to rear brakes. Each EHA unit includes an electric motor, a reduction gear unit, a pair of magnetorheological clutches, and a pair of fluid pumps. The system further including an ECU that actuates the electric motor and controls engagement of the clutches to cause the fluid pump to pump brake fluid to at least one of the front and rear brakes. The system further includes a regeneration system for providing supplemental electricity to the electric motors.

Brake by wire

A fluid pumping system for a vehicle having an internal combustion engine comprises a housing, an electric motor, a rotatable first input adapted to be driven by the internal combustion engine, a rotatable second input driven by the electric motor, and a pump. The pump includes a drum selectively rotated about a drum axis of rotation by one of the first input and the second input, and a pump rotor selectively rotated by the other of the first input and the second input. The drum includes a cam ring having a cavity in receipt of the pump rotor. The drum includes a first fluid inlet port and a second fluid inlet port on opposite sides of the drum such that fluid entering the cavity through the first and second fluid ports flows axially in a direction parallel to the drum axis of rotation. The drum includes a radially extending outlet port such that pumped fluid flows radially out of the cavity. The housing contains the electric motor and the pump.

Dual drive vane pump

A variable capacity vane pump () is provided having a pump control ring () that is moveable to alter the capacity of the pump (). A control chamber () is formed between the pump casing () and the control ring (). The control chamber () is operable to receive pressurized fluid to create a force to move the control ring () to reduce the volumetric capacity of the pump (). A primary return spring () acts between the control ring () and the casing () to bias the control ring () towards a position of maximum volumetric capacity. A shaft is coupled at one end to the control ring and a second end of the shaft is positioned a predetermined distance from the casing (). A secondary return spring () is mounted about the shaft and is configured to engage the control ring () after the control ring () has moved a predetermined amount. The secondary return spring () biases the control ring () towards a position of maximum volumetric capacity. The secondary return spring () acts against the force of the control chamber () to establish a second equilibrium pressure.

Pre-compression dual spring pump control

A variable capacity vane pump for an automobile includes a pump control ring positioned within the housing to move about a pivot. A rotor is positioned within a cavity of the control ring such that a position of the control ring determines an offset between a center of the cavity and an axis of rotation of the rotor. A first control chamber is provided between the pump housing and a first outer surface of the control ring. The first outer surface is positioned on an opposite side of the control ring as the working fluid chambers within the cavity. A second control chamber is provided between the pump housing and a second outer surface of the control ring. A return spring biases the control ring toward a position of maximum volumetric capacity against the forces created by the pressurized fluid within the first and second control chambers.

Vane pump with multiple control chambers

An oil pressure relief valve for use in the oil pump lubrication system of an internal combustion engine is controlled by both oil pump outlet pressure and by pilot pressure from a pilot valve which is selectively applied by a control member, preferably a two-way valve that is operated by the engine control module. The pilot valve selectively supplies one of the oil pump outlet pressure or the engine gallery pressure to the control member which selectively supplies pilot valve pressure to the oil pump pressure relief valve which has a single piston. The pilot valve includes first and second pistons for selectively controlling back pressure from the pressure relief valve and for managing changes in oil pressure due to changes in the engine gallery to maintain a virtually constant pressure even as oil pump speed increases when the control member connects the pilot valve to the pressure relief valve resulting in a fuel economy benefit and improved control of the oil pump pressure.

Oil pump with selectable outlet pressure

A variable capacity vane pump includes a first control chamber between a pump casing and a first portion of a pump control ring. The first portion of the control ring circumferentially extends on either side of a pivot pin. A second control chamber is provided between the pump casing and a second portion of the pump control ring. The first and second control chambers are operable to receive pressurized fluid to create a force to move the pump control ring to reduce the volumetric capacity of the pump. A return spring biases the pump ring toward a position of maximum volumetric capacity.

A pressure relief valve includes a housing including an inlet chamber adapted to be in communication with an outlet of a pump and an outlet chamber adapted to be in communication with a pump inlet. The housing includes a bore having a first end in communication with the inlet chamber and a main spill aperture in communication with the bore and the outlet chamber. A piston includes an orifice and an axially spaced apart aperture. The piston is axially moveable within the bore between a first position whereat the piston seals the inlet chamber from the outlet chamber, a second position whereat the inlet and outlet chambers are in fluid communication with one another via only the orifice, and a third position whereat the inlet and outlet chambers are in fluid communication with one another via the orifice and the aperture. A spring biases the piston toward the first position.

Pressure relief valve with orifice

A pressure relief valve for use in regulating discharge fluid pressure of a pump. A first wall of the outlet intersects with the wall of the passage of the pressure relief valve. The housing includes a counterbore at the intersection of wall of the passage and the first wall of the outlet port to provide a counterbore surface that is perpendicular to the wall of the passage around the outer circumference of the valve body. The top end of the valve body includes a reduced diameter portion and a tapered portion between the reduced diameter portion and the top of the valve body.

Low gain pressure relief valve for a fluid pump

A variable capacity vane includes a pump control ring which is moveable to alter the capacity of the pump and the pump can be operated at either of at least two selected equilibrium pressures. The pump ring is moved by at least first and second control chambers, the control chambers abutting the control ring such that pressurized fluid supplied to them acts on the pump control ring to move the pump control ring to reduce the volumetric capacity of the pump. When pressurized fluid is supplied to only one control chamber, the pump operates at a first equilibrium pressure and when pressurized fluid is also supplied to the second chamber, the pump operates at a second equilibrium pressure. Pressurized fluid can also be supplied only to the second control chamber to operate the pump at a third equilibrium pressure and/or additional control chambers can be provided if required.

Variable capacity vane pump with dual control chambers

A pump system includes pump having a control feature which, responsive to a supply of pressurized working fluid, reduces the pressure of the working fluid pressurized by the pump. The control feature is connected to the output of the pump by a regulating valve. The control feature receives pressurized working fluid to decrease the output of the pump in response to the pressure of the supplied working fluid. A regulating valve selectively connects the pressurized working fluid to the control feature. The regulating valve has a control port to receive pressurized working fluid from the pump to urge the valve to a closed position against a biasing force. A controllable valve is operable to interrupt the supply of pressurized working fluid to control port to alter the output pressure of the pump.

Control system and method for pump output pressure control

A rotary positive displacement pump employs the higher pressure available at a region within the rotor chamber after the outlet port to augment the force of a biasing spring in a control system. A biasing spring with a lower spring force can thus be employed in the control system, resulting in a pump pressure output characteristic which can more closely match the operating speed varying working fluid requirements for devices supplied by the pump.

Pump control using overpressure source

A pump system includes a fixed or variable capacity pump and a speed-related control mechanism to alter the capacity of a variable capacity pump or to alter the relief pressure of a fixed capacity pump in response to changes in the operating speed of the pump. A pressure generator comprising a volume of working fluid is rotated at a speed related to the operating speed of the pump and creates a forced vortex in the working fluid. The pressure induced in the working fluid of the forced vortex is used as a speed related control to alter the discharge pressure of the pump as desired.
