A wireless telecommunication system includes base stations for communicating with terminal devices. One or more base stations support a power boost operating mode in which a base station's available transmission power is concentrated in a subset of its available transmission resources to provide enhanced transmission powers as compared to transmission powers on these transmission resources when the base station is not operating in the power boost mode. A base station establishes an extent to which one or more base stations in the wireless telecommunications system support the power boost operating mode conveys an indication of this to a terminal device. The terminal device receives the indication and uses the corresponding information to control its acquisition of a base station of the wireless telecommunication system, for example by taking account of which base stations support power boosting and/or when power boosting is supported during a cell attach procedure.

Telecommunications apparatus and methods

The system supports a virtual carrier mode of operation in which downlink communications are made by a base station using a radio interface that spans a system frequency bandwidth while a terminal device is configured to receive at least some communications from the base station within a restricted subset of transmission resources selected from within the system frequency bandwidth. The system supports terminal devices in both a radio resource control connected mode and a radio resource control idle mode. When there is to be a change in system information the base station transmits to the terminal device an indication that updated system information is to be broadcast by the base station and this indication is received by the terminal device while in the connected mode. Before seeking to acquire the updated system information, the terminal device transitions from the connected mode to the idle mode.

A communications device including a transmitter transmitting data signals to a network element of a wireless communications system using shared resources of an uplink of a first wireless access interface included in the network element, a receiver receiving data signals from the network element using shared resources of a downlink of the first wireless access interface, allocations of the shared resources being made by the network element and the uplink of the first wireless access interface is within a first set of resources, and a controller controlling the transmitter and receiver to transmit/receive signals representing data to/from another communications device using a second wireless access interface within a second set of resources formed from resources of the first set of resources for preferable allocation for device-to-device communications by the network element, resources of the second wireless access interface being time divided into at least a data and control regions.

Communications device

A communications device transmitting/receiving signals to/from a mobile communications network includes one or more network elements providing a wireless access interface for the communications device. The wireless access interface includes plural communications resource elements across a host frequency range of a host carrier, and a first section of the communications resources within a first frequency range for preferable allocation to reduced capability devices forming a first reduced bandwidth carrier and a second section of the communications resources within a second frequency range for preferable allocation to the reduced capability devices forming a second reduced bandwidth carrier. Each of the first and second frequency ranges is within the host frequency range. The communications device is configured with a reduced capability to receive the signals only within a frequency bandwidth less than the host frequency range and equal to at least one of the first frequency range or the second frequency range.

Mobile communication device and method for allocating system information among virtual carriers for machine-type communications

A communications device transmitting/receiving data to/from a mobile communications network includes a transmitter to transmit data to the mobile communications network via a wireless access interface, a receiver to receive data from the mobile communications network via the wireless access interface, and a controller. The wireless access interface includes plural time divided temporal units and in each temporal unit a down-link control channel and a downlink shared channel. The temporal units may be sub-frames of an LTE carrier. The controller can control the receiver to receive downlink control channel information transmitted by the mobile communications network in one or more control channel elements of the downlink control channel, and to receive the downlink control channel information by searching the downlink control channel in a predetermined sub-set of plural possible sets of control channel elements in one or more of the temporal units according to a fixed aggregation level.

Communications device, infrastructure equipment and methods for receiving downlink control information

A communications device transmits and receives date via a wireless access interface in a mobile communications network. First resource allocation messages are received by communications devices to allocate one or more of plural communications resource elements of a host frequency range of a host carrier. Second resource allocation messages are received by reduced capability devices to allocate one or more of a first section of the communications resources within the first frequency range for preferable allocation to the reduced capability devices of a first virtual carrier, the first resource allocation messages identifying one or more of the communications resource of the host carrier allocated to the communications devices with reference to a first reference frequency and the second resource allocation messages identifying one or more communications resources of the first virtual earner allocated to the reduced capability devices with reference to a second reference frequency within the first virtual carrier.

Mobile communications network, communications device and methods

A wireless telecommunication system has a base station arranged to communicate messages to one or more terminal devices over a radio interface. The radio interface has a radio frame structure having a plurality of subframes, and a message may be transmitted in accordance with a first transmission scheme or transmitted in accordance with a second transmission scheme. The message may be transmitted in association with an identifier to indicate a terminal device to which the message is addressed. A characteristic for the identifier, for example a value or control region search space for the identifier, is dependent on whether the message is to be transmitted in accordance with the first transmission scheme or the second transmission scheme. A terminal device to which the message is addressed determines the transmission scheme from the characteristic of the identifier and receives the message accordingly.

Identification of downlink messages using repeated transmission

A wireless telecommunications system including a base station and terminal device, supporting a virtual carrier mode with downlink communications made by the base station using a radio interface spanning a system frequency bandwidth while the terminal device can receive at least some communications from the base station within a restricted subset of transmission resources selected from within the system frequency bandwidth providing a restricted bandwidth downlink. The terminal device can measure channel conditions across the system frequency bandwidth and transmit corresponding measurement reports to the base station. Measurement reports for transmission resources not including the restricted bandwidth downlink channel may be aperiodic while measurement reports for transmission resources including the restricted bandwidth downlink channel may be periodic. Measurement reports for transmission resources not including the restricted bandwidth downlink channel may be based on a subset of the channel condition measurements selected because they are associated with relatively poor channel conditions.

Transmission of measurement reports in a wireless communication system

A communications device, and method, is configured with at least one of an indication of first communications resources of the wireless access interface which can be allocated on request to the communications device by a mobile communications network for transmitting signals to one or more other communications devices in accordance with the first mode of operation or an indication of second communications resources of the wireless access interface, which can be used by the communications device for transmitting signals to one or more other communications devices in accordance with a second mode of operation using a device to device communications protocol.

Communications device and methods

A wireless telecommunications system comprises a base station and a terminal device. The system supports a virtual carrier mode of operation in which downlink communications are made by the base station using a radio interface that spans a system frequency bandwidth while the terminal device is configured to receive at least some communications from the base station within a restricted subset of transmission resources selected from within the system frequency bandwidth. The wireless telecommunications system supports terminal devices in both a radio resource control connected mode and a radio resource control idle mode. Before seeking to acquire the updated system information, the terminal device transitions from the connected mode to the idle mode. The terminal device then seeks to acquire updated system information while in the idle mode. The base station restricts the transmission of user-plane data to the terminal device until the terminal device re-enters connected mode. Transitioning to idle mode to acquire system information can help to address issues associated with managing the communication of both system information and user-plane data using the restricted subset of transmission resources.

A communications device comprising a transmitter for transmitting signals representing device-to-device communications to a second communications device across a wireless access interface, a receiver for receiving signals representing device-to-device communication from the second communications device across the wireless access interface, the wireless access interface including a control resource for communicating control data between communications devices and a data resource for communicating user data between communications devices, the control data providing scheduling assignments for the allocation of resources of the data resource, and a controller for controlling the transmitter and the receiver to perform interference detection in one or more of the control resource and the data resource, and to transmit in the control resources, in response to detecting interference in one or more of the control resource and the data resource, signals representing an indication of the detected interference to the second communications device.

A network element forming a mobile communications network, and configured to provide a wireless access interface to one or more communications devices and to transmit downlink data to and receive uplink data from the communications devices via the wireless access interface. The downlink resources extend across a predetermined bandwidth and are time divided into plural timeframes. The network element includes a transmitter, and controller configured to control the transmitter to transmit control data to the communications devices in resources of a control channel formed from plural control channel modules formed from only part of the predetermined bandwidth and mutually exclusive from parts of the predetermined bandwidth from which the other control channel modules are formed. The plural control channel modules allow the control channel to be varied in bandwidth and adapted to the structure of the communications network, the communications devices being served and traffic conditions in the communications network.
