A three-dimensional model can be presented in a two-dimensional digital canvas on a computer display. User input directed at the three-dimensional model in the two-dimensional canvas can be received. The three-dimensional model can be manipulated in response to the user input. A two-dimensional view of the three-dimensional model can be displayed. Corresponding data structures for the model, the canvas, and the two-dimensional objects in the data structure can be maintained and updated. One or more additional techniques can also be utilized in a computer system, such as continuous user-controlled model rotation in a two-dimensional canvas; viewport autofit and non-autofit modes; rotating the model around a camera look-at point; ghosting outside the viewport; normalizing modeling units and values; preset buttons with on-button previews; user-defined view presets; and/or two-dimensional image substitution.

The Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) standard defines a way to describe two-dimensional graphics within the extensible markup language (XML) that can be interpreted by multiple programs. The SVG standard, however, lacks native support for several user experience features, such as look and feel settings (e.g., themes) that affect multiple objects within a document. The present disclosure, however, teaches how an SVG object may be made theme-aware and still comply with the SVG standard so that it is portable between files and applications that apply the present disclosure and those that do not. By enabling the dynamic updating of SVG objects, the benefits to the user experience and computer efficiency associated with standardized vector graphics and the document-wide application of look and feel settings can be realized without deviating from the SVG standard.

A system combines 2D and 3D modeling in rendering shapes and includes: a 3D modeling factory to generate a 3D model of selected shape parameters or features; a front face factory to generate 2D text and text effects, and some 2D shape effects; a ground plane factory to generate effects that are rendered on a ground plane of a shape; and a rasterizer/compositing engine to combine 2D and 3D effects generated by the front face factory, ground plan factory, and the 3D modeling factory.

Technologies are described herein for emitting raster and vector content from a single software component. An application program maintains an in-memory representation of a document in an intermediate format. When the application program needs to render the document, it determines whether the target device is a raster or a vector device. The application program then utilizes a single software component to render the document for the target device. The application program provides an instruction to the software component as to whether the in-memory representation should be rendered as vector content or as raster content. In response to receiving the instruction, the software component retrieves the in-memory representation and renders it according to the instruction received from the application program. The rendered content is then provided to the target device.
