A real-time virtual reality welding system including a programmable processor-based subsystem, a spatial tracker operatively connected to the programmable processor-based subsystem, at least one mock welding tool capable of being spatially tracked by the spatial tracker, and at least one display device operatively connected to the programmable processor-based subsystem. The system is capable of simulating, in virtual reality space, a weld puddle having real-time molten metal fluidity and heat dissipation characteristics. The system is further capable of importing data into the virtual reality welding system and analyzing the data to characterize a student welder's progress and to provide training.

Importing and analyzing external data using a virtual reality welding system

The present invention is a simulator for skill-oriented training. The simulator includes a work piece platform having a sensor, a head-mounted display unit (HMDU) including a camera, a speaker and a sensor providing visual and audio output to an operator, and a controller having a controller sensor. The simulator includes a processor that executes algorithms to simulate a virtual training environment depicting a work piece rendered on the work piece platform. The controller sensor, the HMDU sensor and the platform sensor output signals to the processor representing spatial positioning, angular orientation and movement data of the controller relative to the work piece to render a virtual powder coating spray pattern including a stream having particles charged and emitted from the controller and a powder coating coverage as applied to the work piece during one or more passes of a powder coating spray process performed by the operator.

Simulator for skill-oriented training

A skill-based training system includes a processing system having a processor, memory coupled to the processor with executable instructions stored therein, and an input-output controller coupled to the processor and to input and output devices. The memory includes lesson plans that outline skill-based tasks and activities, and predetermined performance criteria. The processor is configured by the instructions to present interfaces on the output devices simulating a virtual training environment. The processor is configured to receive input signals representative of performing the tasks and activities in the virtual environment, and to evaluate the performance by comparing the performed tasks and activities to the criteria, to determine a score and to present the score on the output devices. The system includes work orders categorized by the lesson plans and defining within an increasing progression of a degree of skill, knowledge, critical thinking and problem solving needed to complete the tasks and activities.

Systems and methods providing an enhanced user experience in a real-time simulated virtual reality welding environment

Embodiments of the present invention pertain to a computer program product and processor based computing system that provides processing means for executing coded instructions and input means for interacting with said processing means to create a virtual welding environment. The system establishes an objective to change a functional or operational state of a virtual article, and directs the end user to perform at least one virtual welding operation for changing its functional state. The system trains new users and inexperienced welders on the fundamental aspects of welding.

Welding simulator

A simulator facilitates simulated welding activity of simulated weld joints. The simulator may include a logic processor based system operable to execute coded instructions for generating an interactive welding environment in which a welding activity is simulated, the welding activity occurring at an interface of a first simulated work piece and a second simulated work piece that defines a simulated weld joint. The simulator is capable of simulating the simultaneous welding of multiple users on the simulated weld joint in real time.

Arc welding simulations that provide simulation of virtual destructive and non-destructive testing and inspection of virtual weldments for training purposes. The virtual testing simulations may be performed on virtual weldments created using a virtual reality welding simulator system (e.g., a virtual reality arc welding (VRAW) system). The virtual inspection simulations may be performed on 'pre-canned' (i.e. pre-defined) virtual weldments or using virtual weldments created using a virtual reality welding simulator system. In general, virtual testing may be performed using a virtual reality welding simulator system (e.g., a virtual reality arc welding (VRAW) system), and virtual inspection may be performed using a standalone virtual weldment inspection (VWI) system or using a virtual reality welding simulator system (e.g., a virtual reality arc welding (VRAW) system). In accordance with certain enhanced embodiments of the present invention, virtual testing may also be performed on a standalone VWI system.

Virtual reality arc welding systems that provide virtual reality simulations for training purposes. Virtual reality welding systems to aid in training welding students may provide a programmable processor-based subsystem, a rendering engine, an analysis engine, and recommended corrective actions based on virtual testing results.

Systems and methods providing enhanced education and training in a virtual reality environment

A system and a method for tracking and analyzing welding activity. Dynamic spatial properties of a welding tool are sensed during a welding process producing a weld. The sensed dynamic spatial properties are tracked over time and the tracked dynamic spatial properties are captured as tracked data during the welding process. The tracked data is analyzed to determine performance characteristics of a welder performing the welding process and quality characteristics of a weld produced by the welding process. The performance characteristics and the quality characteristics may be subsequently reviewed.
