An outboard motor has a top cowl and a service lid on the top cowl is movable into and between a closed position enclosing the powerhead compartment and an open position providing manual access to the powerhead compartment from above the outboard motor. An engine is in the powerhead compartment, wherein a peripheral gap is defined between the top cowl and the engine. A serviceable engine oil device is in the peripheral gap and is manually accessible from above the outboard motor when the service lid is in the open position. A serviceable transmission fluid device is in the peripheral gap and is manually accessible from above the outboard motor when the service lid is in the open position. A serviceable gearcase fluid device is in the peripheral gap and is manually accessible from above the outboard motor when the service lid is in the open position.

Top-down serviceable outboard motors

A marine propulsion device is provided. The device includes an engine, a driveshaft that is caused to rotate by the engine, a cowling system, a gearcase that supports a propulsor for imparting a propulsive force in a body of water, and a cooling water circuit that conveys cooling water that exchanges heat with the engine. The cooling water circuit includes an engine dump hose that extends from a first end to a second end. The first end is coupled to a cooling water outlet of the engine. The cooling water circuit further includes an egress component configured to discharge the cooling water from the device along a discharge trajectory parallel to a plane that bisects the device into a port side and a starboard side. The egress component extends through one or more components of the cowling system and is coupled to the second end of the engine dump hose.

A marine propulsion device is provided. The device includes an engine, a driveshaft that is caused to rotate by the engine, a cowling system, a gearcase that supports a propulsor for imparting a propulsive force in a body of water, and a cooling water circuit that conveys cooling water that exchanges heat with the engine. The cooling water circuit includes an engine dump hose that extends from a first end to a second end. The first end is coupled to a cooling water outlet of the engine. The cooling water circuit further includes an egress component configured to discharge the cooling water from the device at a discharge angle relative to a vertical axis. The egress component extends through one or more components of the cowling system and is coupled to the second end of the engine dump hose.

A cowling for an outboard motor extends from port side to starboard side in a lateral direction. The cowling includes port and starboard inlets that direct flow of intake air into the cowling and face outwardly in the lateral direction. The cowling further comprises port and starboard duct systems. Each duct system is configured to receive and convey intake air from one of the port and starboard intake ports to an intake conduit for the outboard motor. Each duct system defines a first separation region that receives and conveys the intake air laterally outward to separate a first portion of water from the intake air. Each duct system further defines a second separation region that receives and conveys the intake air from the first separation region laterally inward to separate a second portion of water from the intake air.

A marine drive is provided. The marine drive includes a propulsion unit, a supporting cradle that couples the propulsion unit to a transom bracket for attachment to a marine vessel, and a cowling system that at least partially covers a portion of the propulsion unit and a portion of the supporting cradle. The cowling system includes upper, middle, and lower cowling components, and the middle and lower cowling components are separated by a dynamic gap. The marine drive further includes a sound blanket positioned between the supporting cradle and the middle and lower cowling components. The sound blanket is configured to span the dynamic gap and block sound that would otherwise emanate from the propulsion unit via the dynamic gap.

A marine drive is provided. The marine drive includes a propulsion unit, a supporting cradle that couples the propulsion unit to a transom bracket for attachment to a marine vessel, and a cowling system that at least partially covers a portion of the propulsion unit and a portion of the supporting cradle. The cowling system includes multiple cowl components, and at least one of the multiple cowl components is coupled to the supporting cradle using an elastic cowl mount assembly. The elastic cowl mount assembly includes a conical bushing coupled to the cowl component, an external housing coupled to the supporting cradle, and a compliant body coupled to the conical bushing and the external housing. The compliant body permits radial and axial movement of the conical bushing relative to the external housing.

Transmission systems and methods are for a marine propulsion device having an internal combustion engine that drives a propulsor. An input shaft is driven into rotation at a non-zero first rotational speed by the internal combustion engine. An output shaft drives the propulsor into rotation at a non-zero second rotational speed. A planetary gearset transfers power from the input shaft to the output shaft. A band brake is on the planetary gearset. Actuation of the band brake effects a gear change in the planetary gearset. A band brake actuator actuates the band brake to effect the gear change. A controller controls the band brake actuator. Based upon one or more operational characteristics of the marine propulsion device the controller is programmed to control the band brake actuator so that the second rotational speed is less than the first rotational speed.

Systems and methods for controlling planetary transmission arrangements for marine propulsion devices

An anti-ingestion system is provided for a marine drive with a submerged exhaust outlet. An anti-ingestion valve is operated by differential pressure thereacross to a closed condition when the engine is operating in an on state and cooling water is being pumped through a water conduit to an exhaust mixing point, with the anti-ingestion valve blocking passage of cooling water therepast in the noted closed condition. The anti-ingestion valve is operated by differential pressure thereacross to an open condition when the engine is in an off state, and permits passage of air therethrough and communicates atmospheric pressure through the water conduit to the exhaust mixing point to relieve vacuum in the exhaust system.

A cooling system for a marine propulsion device provides a transom opening that is sufficiently low with respect to other components of the marine propulsion device to allow automatic draining of all cooling water from the system when the marine vessel is removed from the body of water in which it had been operating. The engine cooling passages and other conduits and passages of the cooling system are all located at positions above the transom opening. The system provides automatic draining for a marine cooling system that is an open system and which contains no closed cooling portions.

A cooling system for a marine propulsion device provides a closed portion of the cooling system which recirculates coolant through the engine block and cylinder head, the exhaust manifold, and the exhaust elbow. It provides a pressure relief cap connected to the exhaust elbow and a low velocity portion of the coolant jacket of the exhaust elbow to facilitate the release of gas and coolant when pressures exceed a preselected magnitude.
