A banking system includes a plurality of automated banking machines and operates to cause financial transfers responsive to data read from data bearing records. Each machine () includes a user interface (), a card reader () of data bearing records, a cash dispenser (), and other transaction function devices. The card reader operates to read card data corresponding to financial accounts from user cards. In exchange for providing the machines at no charge to a merchant, user transaction fees assessed to machine users are shared by both the machine provider and the merchant.

Notes are engaged in supporting connection with the stack support member as the stack support member is rotated in a first rotational direction. After the stack is accumulated, rotation of the stack support member in an opposed rotational direction delivers the stack from the stacker mechanism.

An automated canister reloading machine is able to reload a currency canister removed from an ATM. The reloading machine includes a supply of currency notes. The reloading machine can transfer currency notes from the supply into a storage area of the canister. The reloading machine is able to update the canister memory.

The deposited items are passed through the opening () and are deposited in a deposit-holding container (). The deposited items may be marked with indicia corresponding to the transaction or properties of the deposited item where the envelope originally dispensed to the user for holding the deposited item.
