A data storage library is described that protects against a malware attack by providing a scheduled write window of time where archive data can be written to tape cartridges in the tape library on behalf of a client. At times outside of the write window, the tape library is disabled from writing any archive data to any of the tape cartridges in the tape library. Accordingly, the tape library is protected from a malicious entity attempting to download malware to tape cartridges in the tape library outside of the designated write windows. The tape library is configured to provide or otherwise read archived data from a tape cartridge both in the write window and outside of the write window.

An apparatus and associated method that contemplate obtaining a server in selective communication with an archive storage controller (ASC) via a computer network, the ASC having access to a plurality of removable storage mediums (RSMs); storing data in the server; creating a logical storage volume in the ASC that has a logical relationship to the data stored in the server; and after the creating step, and without communication between the server and the ASC via the computer network, selecting at least one of the RSMs and dedicating the selected at least one RSM for retaining only data that is stored in the logical storage volume.

Automated backup of network attached storage

An apparatus and associated methodology contemplating a processor-based storage controller and a nontransient, tangible computer memory configured to store a plurality of data files. Computer instructions are stored in the computer memory defining container-level array storage logic that is configured to be executed by the controller to sequentially containerize the data files to a plurality of virtual storage containers, and to flush the virtual storage containers by migrating each storage container's contents to a respective physical storage device.

Described is a tape library system that generally comprises a plurality of tape drives and a data bus that links a host computer system to a first tape drive address and a second tape drive address. However, the first tape drive address points to a first controller and switch system that assumes the identity of one of the tape drives. The first controller and switch system is linked to a first tape drive adapted to cooperate with a first type of tape cartridge and a second tape drive adapted to cooperate with second type of tape cartridge. The second tape drive address points to a second controller and switch system that assumes the identity of a different one of the tape drives. The second controller and switch system is linked to a third tape drive adapted to cooperate with the first type of tape cartridge and a third tape drive adapted to cooperate with the second type of tape cartridge.

Tape library with multiple generation drives

An apparatus and associated methodology contemplating an apparatus having a processor-based storage controller. A nontransient, tangible computer memory is configured to store a data file. Computer instructions are stored in the computer memory defining file-level array storage logic that is configured to be executed by the controller to logically containerize the data file in a file-level data set across a plurality of virtual storage containers, and to concurrently flush the virtual storage containers by migrating units of the file-level data set to a plurality of physical storage devices.

Embodiments described are generally directed to a mass storage unit possessing a plurality of non-volatile data storage devices each possessing non-transitory mass storage memory hardware, a drive message router possessing with a plurality of different light sequence instructions retained therein, a motherboard that is connected to each of the non-volatile data storage devices and the drive message router via a bus that is adapted to transfer data via a data storage protocol arranged for mass data storage, a bezel electrically connected to the drive message router via an electrical cable that is adapted to transfer signals in a non-data storage protocol, a plurality of lights visibly disposed on the bezel. The drive message router is adapted to receive a data packet in the data storage protocol from the motherboard via the bus. Once received, an execution instruction is extracted from the message to carry out a subset of the light sequence instructions in a particular order. A sequence of electrical signals is transmitted from the drive message router to the plurality of lights based on the subset of the light instructions via the electrical cable. The plurality of lights are illuminated as dictated in the sequence of electrical signals.

An apparatus and associated method for interfacing a plurality of electronic devices with a network to execute input/output (I/O) commands. A power manager is configured to individually control amounts of power supplied to each of the electronic devices. The power manager selectively increases an amount of power supplied to a first one of the electronic devices based on an amount of power being supplied to a different second one of the electronic devices.

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for mobile media with both dedicated readable and writeable user data space and dedicated readable and writeable drive device space. The mobile data storage media adapted for operatively working with a drive device comprises a data space accessible by an end user and a drive software space accessible by the drive device and inaccessible by an end user. The drive software space is adapted to accommodate firmware for use by the drive device in addition to the reading and writing of software by the drive device. The media is adapted to receive and store software from the drive device or, alternatively, is adapted to transmit software to the drive device.

Disclosed are a method and apparatus for a data storage library comprising a first and second drive, a first and second mobile medium, a first and second partition wherein the first partition comprises the first drive and the first mobile medium and the second partition comprises the second drive and the second mobile medium, and a combination bridge controller device. The combination bridge controller device is configurable to control first communication traffic between at least a first client and the first partition wherein the first communication traffic can comprise a first data package. The combination bridge controller device is further configurable to optionally encrypt the first data package for storage on the first mobile medium when the first mobile medium is in cooperation with the first drive.

An apparatus and associated methodology contemplate a data storage system having a removable storage device operably transferring user data between the data storage system and another device via execution of a plurality of input/output commands. A commonality factoring module executes computer instructions stored in memory to assign commonality information to the user data. A deduplication module executes computer instructions stored in memory to combine a plurality of files of the user data (user data files) with at least one file of corresponding commonality information (commonality information file), the combined files forming a sequential data stream.

A magazine-based data storage library is described that includes plurality of chambers each adapted to hold a magazine, that in turn, is adapted to hold a plurality of tape cartridges. The storage library further includes a tape drive adapted to read and write data to and from tape cartridges. The storage library further includes a vacant chamber that shifts from a first chamber when a recently used magazine is disposed therein to a second chamber when a new magazine is withdrawn there from. The recently used magazine most recently being withdrawn from a different chamber than the first chamber where it is later disposed.

An apparatus and associated methodology contemplate a data storage system having a removable storage device operably transferring data between the data storage system and another device via execution of a plurality of input/output (I/O) commands. A commonality factoring (CF) module executing computer instructions stored in memory assigns a CF tag to a data pattern in the transferred data. A deduplication module executing computer instructions stored in memory determines if the data pattern corresponding to the CF tag is previously stored in the removable storage device.

A storage library is described that includes a shelf system adapted to support a number of tape cartridges. The storage library further includes a tape drive adapted to read and write data to and from tape cartridges. The storage library further possesses a temporary repository near the tape drive that is adapted to facilitate an exchange of a first tape cartridge intended to be loaded in the tape drive with a second tape cartridge ready to be removed from the tape drive with a single tape picker device.
